Stephen King’s IT🩸 I’ve been dying to share this project for a while and am so excited that it’s finally been revealed. I’ve loved Stephen King’s work since my mom got me a copy of Pet Cemetery as a kid, and to be given the opportunity to design the packaging for IT, probably his most famous work, was a dream come true. I put a lot of thought into each element of this assignment and will share the early sketches and killed comps at some point soon. But for the direction that was chosen, here’s what I was thinking….. The Box: I wanted the box to appear like a gift. Unassuming but ominous, like Derry, Maine itself. A single balloon drawing you in the same way Pennywise would attract the attention of his victims The Cover: Once you pick up the box and open up to see what’s inside, you are met with the bloody chaos of what lies beneath Derry, Maine. A Nebula of disorder and fear that coagulates to show a screaming Pennywise with a mouth full of sharp teeth. The Box interior: after you pull the book out of the box, you see simple instructions on how to make a paper boat. This give the reader the same information that Georgie has in the first scene when he makes a paper boat that falls into the gutter and we get our first introduction to Pennywise. The Endpapers: I decided to do two separate endpaper illustrations so that they could serve as a visual intro and outro for the book. The first is a sink full of blood. Letting you know that something violent is happening in this book, and it may be coming from the drain. The second is a similarly centralized image, mirroring the drain, but is instead showing “The Deadlight”. Depicting what the reader now knows having finished the book. That “IT” and it’s malignant existence is of extraterrestrial origins. Thank you to @foliosociety for the opportunity. They Both Die at the End - Deluxe Edition I’m beyond stoked that this repacked has finally been announced. I couldn’t wait to start building out special art and features for this edition when it was assigned to me, and now that it’s going to be a real thing, I am totally euphoric! I could have sworn my jacket flaps idea would have been laughed out of the room, but they will be real come October and clenching this amazing bestseller between their deadly teeth.
