“It’s gotta bounce to make the sound” Rayce, PK3
Don’t Mute DC! Don’t Mute Me: Chuck Brown and Go Go was our PreK 3’s Black Joy Project in the art studio.
We experienced and learned about DC Culture and History, Sound, Soul, Activism, that beat and bounce, Instruments, percussion, Africa, painting what go go feels like, making Instruments, call and response, dancing, playing “in the pocket,” listening, singing, being heard, adding gold paint marks to show the percussive beat, and so much more.
Here comes the next generation of DC go go musicians ready to make their voices heard and seen! They did not like the true story of some outsiders trying to mute the culture. A great lesson on how to encounter new places and people with curiosity and love. #BlackJoy #gogomusic #reggioinspired #dchistoryandculture #multisensory @dcps_arts@schoolwithinschool@thegogomuseum@longlivegogodmv@chuckbrownband@teachfortheculture

Back home in DC and the realization has just kicked in…. 33 public, urban city kids decided they wanted to challenge themselves and attend JTF for the very 1st time. Could we think outside the box and tell the story with no props, costumes in 15 minutes?! Could we find time outside of our regular theater projects and create our strongest ensemble yet? We put our best efforts towards “ Shrek jr”. We fundraised, met on Sunday evenings, and worked so hard for a chance to perform and just maybe get a pay on the back for our efforts. But then magic happened…. We believed in each other…we believed in ourselves. We pushed a little bit harder and showed up a little bit earlier. And suddenly, we find ourselves in Atlanta, at JTF. We did our best before the judges and their words of encouragement warmed our hearts…. Until my tech student said…. “Ms. Pergerson, did you get the message? We were awarded The All-festival Performance award”. That means…. Out of 7k people, 141 groups… 9 were selected as top winners. SHMS was included. I’m humbled as a director who absolutely adores her students …. We experienced something beautiful together… joy, art, community, love. We will never forget JTF ‘26. #nextlevelloading26 want to watch our adjudication: https://youtu.be/338MmOeONsg? feature=shared. https://youtu.be/40hYXt4_tgE?feature=shared
