Despite the rising cost of necessities, DC lawmakers have eliminated the annual cost-of-living adjustment for the TANF program. Reducing cash assistance for families with the fewest resources will push more children into poverty. Read more at DCFPI.org
Starting today, families that need help paying for child care will be put on a waitlist for the District’s subsidy program - the only resource helping parents pay for care. When parents can’t afford child care, they work less or leave the workforce.
Last week, we delivered 1,000 postcards from DC residents to the Wilson Building to remind our council that TANF is still a lifeline.
Despite the program’s proven role in reducing family hardship and supporting child well-being, DC lawmakers approved cuts to TANF in the FY26 financial plan.

TANF 👏 is 👏 still 👏 a 👏 lifeline
Today, members of our staff, alongside mothers who have participated in TANF, testified before the Department of Human Services Committee of the DC Council. They are asking for a reversal of the TANF cuts to avoid pushing children deeper into poverty and hardship.
We’re inviting neighbors, colleagues, and friends to support our broader national solidarity movement we are building across the United States. This campaign is deeply rooted in DC, so we had to bring it to you first!
Together For DC is a new campaign that is working to build a broad, steadfast national campaign that (1) mobilizes people nationwide in power-building solidarity with DC’s fight for autonomy and self-governance, (2) connects DC’s fight for autonomy to the shared fight against tyranny and authoritarian overreach, and (3) empowers people with the tools to take meaningful action to protect DC.
Folks should expect to leave with deeper knowledge of the Together For DC, and a clear understanding of how they can be involved in the campaign, plus some cool campaign swag.

We’re out here at DC Council testifying about how badly we need the city to help our unhoused neighbors and returning citizens get ID, which unlocks access to housing, banking, employment, public and private benefits, and more—all the things people need to care for themselves and their families and to flourish. This is a discrimination issue. This is a voting rights issue. This is a justice issue.
📣 ACTION ALERT
