A long time ago in a Go-Go far, far away...the sound of the city ruled the night🌙 You Had to be There‼️‼️‼️Congratulations to all the nominees, honorees and winners at the 2026 Go-Go Awards celebrating 50 years of our homegrown culture 🏆 #DCHistory #GoGo50 #TheRealDC
Today, I will dedicate the page to my Mom Bayyinah Tariq who transitioned from this Earthly realm yesterday. There would be no DC Decades without her raising me in the manner that she did. My mother spent the majority of her childhood in Brooklyn New York and moved to Washington DC in the early 60s. When she got to DC she had two children, my sister Nikki in 1965 and me in 1971. We had two different fathers and neither one of them hung around to help raise us. My mom took that on the chin and decided that she was not going to allow that to take her down.
Mom worked tirelessly on getting her education and worked whatever jobs she could to ensure our survival. Although we were financially strapped most of our childhood, she made sure that we did not succumb to that feeling the best she could. Furthermore, she overly compensated for our fathers not being in our lives so due to that I never really missed him. However, as I grew into my teenage years I replaced him with my big Homies in the streets to fill the void. My sister on the other hand turned her frustrations into drug addiction which unfortunately caused her demise three years ago (rest in peace).
Determined to make something of herself, my mom worked her way into law school and eventually earned her law degree in the mid 80s. She practiced Criminal Defense for years down at DC Superior Court and quickly made her name for herself as one of the best to do it. So much so that many of my Homies that I grew up with retained her services during the infamous Crack Epidemic. One of her last clients that she defended on a case was my best friend the late Benny Lee Lawson whom I referred to her before his major situation. After what happened to Benny, she had enough and it caused her to change her practice from Criminal Defense to Probate. She eventually retired from it all in the late 90s. Even though my Mom never made a lot of money as an attorney, she was internally fulfilled due to being able to help her “boys” in the neighborhood for all those years and had a flawless record.
Today we send her to the next realm playing one of her favorites by @melba1moore . We love you Mom and you will be missed 💔
I support so many folks one way or the other in numerous ways. Therefore, when it's MY time to shine and be appreciated, I feel like it's a no-brainer. With that said, I am genuinely asking for the city, especially my Uptown family, that I see partying any and everywhere... every weekend. Yall know who you are 🤔🤣
Your boy won his first Emmy and those who know where we come from and the era we grew up in; this type of achievement is surely not something we could ever imagine. As usual, not being able to help myself, I want to share this legendary moment with you ALL. A HUGE and UNPRECEDENTED win for the city!!!!

🏆 Emmy Nominated Documentary ~ Barry's Blueprint NOW PLAYING on WHUT-TV and PBS
He may have seen his boat more than he saw me. It's okay tho because even without the gift of a stepfather or a consistent father figure, I still became the man I'm sure he could be proud to call his Son. I don't think I ever wished my father a happy birthday but today I will.
I chose forgiveness before his transition. Happy Birthday Man! Continue to rest easy 🙏🏾 #TheRealDC
