Building on strong action and partnerships to support a resilient #GreatBarrierReef.
The Reef 2050 Catchment Water Quality Strategy has been released by the Australian and Queensland Governments.
The strategy provides an updated framework to build on efforts to continue improving the quality of water flowing to the Reef.
The strategy will:
• foster stronger collaboration and deliver more targeted approaches
• better address the broad range of water quality challenges across the 35 major catchments
• support actions that directly link to how the Reef ecosystem functions and what it needs to remain healthy.
Working together with our partners, we’re committed to delivering action to support a resilient Reef now and into the future.

Considering an electric vehicle (EV) but unsure of what’s fact and fiction? 🤔
Welcome back to ‘Get the facts’, the mini‑series addressing common misconceptions about EVs.
Get the facts on EVs and their environmental benefits. 🌱 🌍
The transport sector accounts for around 23% of Australia’s total emissions, with passenger and light commercial vehicles the largest contributor. 🚗
EVs play an important role in reducing emissions and supporting Australia’s climate goals, because they:
• are powered by the electricity grid, which in 2026 includes around 45% renewable energy
• produce zero tailpipe emissions
• produce lower emissions than equivalent petrol and diesel vehicles across their lifespan.
EVs also create significantly less noise and air pollution than comparable petrol and diesel vehicles.

Global events are impacting fuel supply chains across the world. The Australian Government is investing $14.8 billion to immediately secure more fuel, strengthen Australia’s supply chains and build long term resilience to future fuel shocks.
#Budget2026 has been handed down by the Treasurer this evening.

Have your say on the exposure draft of the National Environmental Standard for Environmental Offsets. 🌿
This standard is designed to make sure that when environmental damage can’t be avoided, any approved offsets genuinely make up for that damage and leave the environment better off overall.
This is your chance to have your say before the standard is finalised.

A shout-out to the Royal Exhibition Building on the 125th anniversary of our federal Parliament 📣
Located in Carlton, on the edge of Melbourne’s CBD, the iconic building gets a special mention for hosting:
▶️Parliament’s first sitting in 1901
▶️celebrations held by @museumsvictoria to mark this defining moment in our nation’s history. 🎉
The building was added to our National Heritage List to highlight its role in Australia’s democratic development.
The Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens is also one of 21 Australian places inscribed on the World Heritage List. This recognises the site’s role as a great ‘palace of industry’ during the international exhibition movement of the late 1800s.
World Heritage listing recognises the site’s importance to people everywhere and helps protect it for future generations. 🌏

Every bird counts – your observations matter! 🐦🦢🦆
Today is World Migratory Bird Day and we’re celebrating the power of citizen science and people led conservation.
Your bird sightings help scientists protect migratory birds across Australia and beyond.
Get involved by joining @birdlifeoz ’s Aussie Backyard Bird Count or logging sightings in Birdata, @eBird Australia or the @atlasoflivingaustralia .
Your observations also help keep Australia free of diseases like #H5BirdFlu. Report groups of sick or dead birds to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
To find out more about our work to protect migratory birds, head to dcceew.gov.au and search ‘migratory birds’.

Protecting our feathered friends starts with awareness! 🐦💚
Meet Charlotte and Christina, who are monitoring wild birds to catch any signs of H5 avian influenza (bird flu) early. Their work not only safeguards vulnerable species but also supports local communities relying on these birds for food.
“Everyone has a role in preventing bird flu,” says Charlotte. Simple actions like keeping domestic birds separate from wild ones can make all the difference!
Traditional Owners have cared for the Great Barrier Reef for thousands of years. They have deep cultural and spiritual connections that continue today.
Their knowledge and stewardship are recognised as part of the Reef’s World Heritage Outstanding Universal Value.
Over 170 Traditional Owner groups are custodians of the Reef and its catchments.
Today, Traditional Owners are:
🤝 shaping Reef policy, governance and projects
🌿 leading culturally grounded, community driven initiatives

This International Compost Awareness Week, we’re celebrating better soil, better life and better futures.
There’s a circular journey from grocery to home composting and organic recycling, and back to rich organic compost that helps grow tomorrow’s fresh produce. 🌱
Through our Compost for Healthy Soils initiatives, we’re sharing practical solutions that make it easier to put food and garden organics (FOGO) to work.
• Fresh produce bags that can be used as FOGO bin liners and in home composting.
• Council trials of a 3 bin systems.
• Truck mounted cameras with AI to reduce contamination and improve compost quality.
Together through councils, businesses and organics processors, we’re helping households turn scraps into resources that enrich soil health and produce across Australia. ♻️

Considering an electric vehicle (EV) but unsure of what’s fact and fiction? 🤔
Welcome back to ‘Get the facts’, the miniseries addressing common misconceptions about EVs.
Get the facts on EV batteries. 🔋 🚗
EV batteries are robust and designed to last for a typical vehicle’s service life.
New EVs often have specific manufacturer warranties for their batteries. These vary between brands but often cover around 8 years and/or 160,000km.
Studies of real life EVs indicate modern EV batteries are expected to last well beyond their warranty period if properly maintained.
Like all batteries, EV batteries degrade over time — this will gradually reduce an EV’s range. Improvements in battery technology are helping extend battery life and durability.
Research is ongoing into building a future EV circular economy in Australia. When an EV reaches the end of its vehicle life, its battery may be recycled or repurposed by specialised businesses for a ‘second life’ such as energy storage.
