Delaware Coalition for Immigrant Justice - May 2026 statement regarding ICE-sought office space in Wilmington In March 2026 a federal contract was solicited for coworking-style workspaces for ICE personnel in locations in 40 states including Wilmington, Delaware. This week, in May 2026, USA Today published an article about this effort and linked it to statements by DHS Secretary Mullin about increased immigration enforcement in federally-designated “sanctuary” areas around the country in Summer 2026. Advocates have suggested a link between this expansion and the development of Homeland Security Task Forces across the country. On an official website, DHS states an HSTF promotes intelligence-sharing between federal agencies, led by HSI/ICE and the FBI, and local agencies in “targeting transnational organized crime” and Wilmington is identified on their map. However, we have our doubts that these resources will not be used to increase civil immigration enforcement. For example, a press release from May 8 by the federal DOJ in Eastern Missouri states two undocumented men were indicted after a HSTF investigation for hiring “at least 25” other undocumented workers. The press release does not indicate what business the workers were hired for, or what happened to them after the investigation. We do not want to rely on federal narratives to identify trends and changes in how immigration enforcement agents are operating in the First State.
