BRAVO TO OUR WRITERS! In Chapter 8 "The Wonder Years: Curiosity and Tenderness," the storytelling is exceptional. Case in point: "A Tale of Two Breasts" by Carol Scott-Conner, whose work we are honored to publish. Scott-Conner is a professor emeritus of surgery at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. She was a founding editor of The Examined Life Journal, where she serves as fiction editor. In 2023, she received her MFA in narrative medicine from Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, NC. Her writing explores the space between surgeon and patient, as experienced by a female academic surgeon. We thank her for her enthusiasm for our work. #doctors #surgeons #whereithurts #surgery #essays

BRAVO TO OUR WRITERS! "Coming Out of the Medical Closet" is an essay that speaks eloquently about the experience of being a nurse in a way that everyone who has spent time in a hospital can relate to—it's relevant to patients as well as clinicians. We are honored to have Angelica's essay in our anthology as well as have her as one of the long-standing poetry editors of Intima. Her accomplishments as a poet, RN and narrative medicine scholar are exceptional. Angelica Recierdo is a poetry editor for Intima, the author of the chapbook One Last Ripe Life and a journalism and health impact fellow at the University of Toronto. She earned an MS in narrative medicine from Columbia University, a BS in nursing from Northeastern University, and an MFA in creative writing from Dominican University of California. #nurses #narrativemedicine #nursesInstagram

Celebrating our Columbia University supporters, Khalid Antonio Taylor and Intima co-founder, creative director, editor and educator Mario de la Cruz (standing) On March 26th at the University Seminar on Narrative, Health and Social Justice, Taylor, De La Cruz and a panel of our brilliant storytellers from "Where It Hurts" spoke about the "Rewards of Reflective Storytelling," during the program's inaugural spring seminar session. As part of a moderated discussion, we shared insights about the process of bringing these pieces from the digital space into book form and the importance of reflective writing practices, representation of the voices in healthcare, and the opportunities present in engaging with the experiences of others through literature. Readers included Rachel Kowalsky, Eve Makoff, Angelica Recierdo, Trisha Paul, Priscilla Mainardi, Bruce Campbell and Jordana Kritzer. Thank you again to the organizers including Zahra Khan and the Narrative Medicine program for the support of this multi-disciplinary anthology of poetry, essays and short stories set in the clinical world and relevant to everyone.

CELEBRATING OUR WRITERS! "Being Seen" is one of the essays in WHERE IT HURTS: DISPATCHES FROM THE EMOTIONAL FRONTLINES OF MEDICINE that always makes me well-up with tears—not because it's sad but because it's about kindness in everyday life. "Being Seen" was written by Cara Haberman, a pediatric hospital medicine physician with the Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Dr. Haberman uses narrative medicine to foster compassion and teach others about the heart of medicine. Honored that it was excerpted in The Purist magazine @thepurist and we want to thank executive editor Ray Rogers @rabbitrogers and visionary editor-in-chief Cristina Cuomo @cristinacuomo who understands the art of narrative medicine. #narrativemedicine #wordsmatter #doctorswhowrite #kindness #parkinglots

READ "D/D" Writing an essay in the second person (using "you," "your," and "yours") isn't an easy feat, but in the essay "D/D," author and physician Maureen Hirthler created a memorable description of losing a mother who was "Never satisfied." Heartbreaking and true to life, this essay will live with you for a long time. Kudos to those who figure out what the title means -- please share in comments! Hirthler is a retired physician who holds an MFA from the University of Missouri- Kansas City. Her work has appeared in The Examined Life Journal, Pulse, Hektoen International, JAMA, and Creative Nonfiction. She lives on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico with her rescue dog, Lola, who is the queen of the palace. #doctors #er #whereithurts #narrativemedicine #blueskies #MOTHERS #mothersday #death

PRAISE TO THE PHYSICIAN POETS IN OUR ANTHOLOGY: "WHERE IT HURTS"! We are honored to include the poem "Kübler-Ross" by Dr. Rancy, a Haitian American poet, novelist and surgical resident in New York City. A graduate of Columbia University, his poetry has appeared in Apogee, Moko, Sargasso, and Seventh Wave. His books include the poetry collection Dreams of Diaspora and the poetry chapbook Self-Portrait in Hospital as Camus from @diodeeditions . His debut novel "Beyond the Baths of Stars" arrives from Amistad / HarperCollins later this year on 11/3/26. (Pre-order @amistadbooks ). Dr. Rancy's novel has been described as "a dazzling literary debut that reimagines The Odyssey and asks what power do we have to control our own fate when destiny feels pre-determined and the systems of the world are broken?" WOW! COME FLY WITH US! Our fiction editor saw our anthology, "Where It Hurts: Dispatches from the Emotional Frontlines of Medicine" at the HudsonNews shop at Newark Liberty International Airport, Terminal A! Grab a copy for your next flight. It is actually really good airplane reading because the essays, short stories and poems are all satisfying reads—short, powerful and you can pick and choose among the 63 brilliant voices. Plus, there is the foreword by the legendary Dr. Rita Charon titled "The Healing Power of Narrative." Looks like copies are going fast! #narrativemedicine #travel #vacationreading #trips

GET BOOKISH! It's a rainy NYC day, my granddaughter is visiting and so I kind of cheated: I ordered books online to celebrate #independentbookstoreday. That said, I did a 'pick-up' order, which means I'll make it to a fave NYC indie bookshop @ptknitwear at some point to thank them again for hosting the launch of our anthology, "Where It Hurts," which I am humbly showing here with all of these other amazing books—shout out especially to @ranaawdish whose "After Shock" comes out in June. Seriously, if you haven't read "In Shock," do it ASAP and then pre-order this next one by an exquisite writer, thinker, doctor, healer. I had no idea P&T Knitwear honors two books a year with its $50,000 Gotham Book Prize! What a store! I ordered one book that got that honor for 2025 -- it's by Ian Frazier, and called "Paradise Bronx: The Life and Times of New York's Greatest Borough." But I will definitely read the other, "In Movement," Nicole Gelinas's book, that "masterfully unpacks the people and politics that have influenced our transportation networks, and their immense influence on our current moment and shared future." After reading Robert Caro's "The Power Broker," I'm keen to see how his twisted, misguided influence on NYC has found challengers who've taken a different route. The Gotham Book Prize was started by P&T founder Bradley Tusk and Howard Wolfson in 2020 to uplift the creative community during the challenging early months of the pandemic and honor the best new books about New York City. Bravo to them! #ShopIndie #WhatToRead #indiebookstoreday #bookstoreday #indiebookstore #bookstagram #shoplocal #bookstore #books #booklover #bibliophile #buylocal #reading #supportindies #localbookstore #booknerd #bookstagram

Tomorrow: Buy a book from an indie! Whenever I travel, I visit an Indie bookstore in the town and buy a book. Like @shermansbooks in Damariscotta, which had the Gabrielle Hamilton book I had to read ASAP when it came out last October. Many of these books I got @nowherebookshop via the @sabookfestival . Pardon the shameless plug of my anthology!
