In 1990, thieves made off with 13 of the @gardnermuseum ‘s most valuable pieces, worth an estimated half a billion dollars. Today, empty frames hang on display, both to educate visitors and to serve as hopeful placeholders awaiting the artworks’ eventual return.
But there’s still plenty of paintings, sculptures, furniture, and textiles gathered by Gardner during her lifetime. An avid art collector and philanthropist, she filled the museum and its courtyard — built to resemble a Venetian palazzo — with pieces you can still see today.
There’s a medieval castle thirty minutes from Amsterdam.
Muiderslot. Built in 1285. Four stone towers, a proper moat, and * DRAMA *. Starting with Count Floris V, who had the place built and then got kidnapped by his own nobles on a hunting trip and thrown in his own dungeon. You can go down there. And it will give you the heeby jeebies.
Fast forward to the 1600s and the castle becomes the summer home of P.C. Hooft a poet & historian who basically turned it into a 17th-century artist residency. Every summer a group of artist, including Vondel, Huygens & Bredero, who called themselves “The Muiderkring”, would gather at the castle #boygang.
It’s a national museum now and somehow still doesn’t feel touristy. Take the train, take the ferry, rent a bike. Love a vacation side quest . 🏰
A week in Barbados wasn’t enough! What an amazing country full of culture, natural beauty, and incredible food! A few highlights include:
Visiting the @graemehallsanctuary where I got to feed and hang out with rescued birds, some of whom enjoyed riding on my head 🦜. I had an unforgettable dining experience at @leshackrestaurant , where the flying fish mousse was to die for.
I dare not forget the fish cutters, a Bajan sandwich filled with fish, cheese, egg, lettuce, tomatoes, and spicy hot pepper sauce. The loaded cutter from @caboosebarbados was my favorite.
I sipped roadside coconuts and got a tour of @mountgayrumbdos distillery! 🍹

That’s a wrap on Time Out! I’ve been lucky enough to make some of my best friends at Time Out, travel all over the world, spend close to a year of my life in London, and grow professionally in incredible ways. I’ve experienced more of the world in these last 9 years than most people get to in a lifetime. I will forever be grateful for the time I got to spend with such amazing co-workers - some of the most fun, smart (and dare I say…hot? ) people I’ve ever met.
