Happy World Theater Day! Beyond grateful to add a new hat to my collection with @wantedmusical heading to Broadway.
This year is all about access and learning. Last year, I got to watch Ken-Matt Martin (@kenmattm ) direct a show with joy being the central focus. I went back to school inspired AF and launched an independent study around that experience with the icon, Stephanie Ybarra (saybarra), advising. As an assignment, I’m blessed to support Stevie Walker-Webb (@steviewalkerwebb ) as he navigates such an ambitious undertaking. Shout out to @p3productions.nyc for demonstrating fierce leadership.
My term as a Delegate for the Actors’ Equity Association has come to an end and WE GOT STUFF DONE!
Over 100 resolutions passed, over 500 contributors heard, a massive piece of legislation known as the Black Theatre Matters Bill gets national recognition, 2 Anthem Awards for service, and a promise kept.
COVID worked hard, but we worked harder! This was a dynamic and bold entrance into the New York Theatre Community, but I am truly better for it. It’s not every day that an actor gets to show off their brain. It’s not every day that a Black man speaks out and is embraced instead of shunned.
I want to thank members of the Broadway League, the American Theatre Wing, Miranda Foundation, BTC, BCEFA, BFRJ, BAC, Black Theatre Girl Magic, The Joy-Jackson Initiative, The March On Broadway, The Tony Awards, The Entertainment Community Fund, The Episcopal Actors’ Guild, The Receipts w/ Davon Williams, ATB Talent, and every person that put their neck on the line with me as we pushed for change.
After an impactful two years, I am ready to return to being a full-time artist. For anyone wondering if you can speak out against injustice and still have a career, I offer this story.
With love and deep gratitude,
Davon Williams
