In the late 90s and early 2000s, a generation of artists turned away from the polished, radio-ready sound that dominated R&B and created something rawer, deeper and more honest. Erykah Badu brought spoken word and spiritual weight to soul music. D’Angelo reached back to the warmth of classic funk and made it feel brand new. Lauryn Hill wove hip hop and gospel into something that felt like a confession. Maxwell, Jill Scott, Common and Bilal all found something different inside the music and pulled it to the surface. It was music with weight and intention behind every note, and decades later those reverberations are still felt.
