3 weeks of travel, some in Greece, some in New York with family. I love my time on the road and am ready for time at home with CO family and my gardens. Life is good.
I’m giving up single-use plastics for Lent. Yes, I know.
Before you ask — no, I’m not religious. But a childhood of trudging to Sunday mass leaves a mark, and apparently so does volunteering to clean up the grounds at Tovrea Castle at Carraro Heights in Phoenix on Valentine’s Day.
Nothing says romance quite like discovering dozens of hypodermic needles and discarded baby bottles among the weeds. The Big Gulp cups and Frappuccino bottles? Honestly, not even a little surprised. But the whole scene was enough to make me put down my own plastic habits and try this again.
So for the next 46 days — yes, 46, because Lent actually includes the Sundays, which I didn’t realize until embarrassingly recently — I’m going SUP-free. Single-use plastics, not stand-up paddleboarding. Though I’m also not doing that.
Here’s what that actually looks like:
🛍️ My shopping bag it always at hand.
🚫 Hard no on disposable water bottles, soda bottles, coffee cups, and plastic cutlery.
🥔 Snacks are a casualty of war.
🥡 Dining out is fine. Takeout containers are not. I bring my own compostable to-go container to restaurants.
🧻 Bamboo TP wrapped in paper, not plastic.
🥦 Reusable produce bags. My car trunk is basically a farmers market at this point.
🍬 And yes — candy is going too. This one is very Lent of me. I did this as a kid. I hated it as a kid. The Easter basket payoff at the end was almost worth it. I’m choosing to believe it still will be.

Our driest winter on record may not be the best time to try my hand at winter sowing. Despite all that, the snow goddesses blessed my little patch with life-giving snow and cold the very first evening. ✨
