A New Chapter Begins
Dear Friends of Davidson Galleries,
Thank you for your support of Davidson Galleries as a fifty-two year member of the Seattle arts community. Although I have closed Davidson Galleries, I am excited to share that the important work of promoting fine original prints and works on paper will continue at 85 Yesler, with a new gallery, Gallery No. 85.
Gallery No. 85 will be showing the works of many accomplished contemporary artists formerly represented by Davidson Galleries.
I am pleased to pass on this community commitment to Elizabeth Hawley, the Owner and Director of Gallery No. 85. She holds her BA and MA in Art History and comes to No. 85 with years of art market experience.
I will continue to sell and administer my own collection as well as that of a select group of private collectors under the name Davidson Print Fellowship. I can be reached at [email protected].
Sam Davidson

New artist feature: Juan Genovés | Echoes of the People. Online only. View these works and the complete collection at davidsongalleries.com
“For me, the little figures fulfill the missions of realism and humanity, in that they represent how we are all the same, but also different.” -Juan Genovés
Juan Genovés (Spanish, 1930-2020) was born in Valencia, Spain in 1930. His childhood was defined by the Spanish Civil War and Franco’s fascist dictatorship, witnessing firsthand the crowds of people running for shelter. Genovés studied at the San Carlos School of Fine Art in Valencia. He settled in Madrid in the 1960s and was connected to many active artist groups including Los Siete, Parpalló, and Hondo, all working in post-war Spain. Throughout his career, Genovés was involved in the opposition movements against the Franco regime, efforts toward the recovery of Spanish democracy, and the fight for social justice.
Rejecting what he considered elitism within abstraction, Genovés borrowed techniques from Pop art, perspectives from newspapers, and surveillance imagery to show crowds, spotlights, and shadows of people in distress. Often devoid of clear landmarks or locational details, his work demonstrates the universality of terror and its effects on people internationally. Genovés’ work has been exhibited and received awards internationally and is held in many major collections, including Centre National d’Art Contemporain in Paris, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, and the Museum Moderner Kunst in Vienna. Genovés died in Madrid in 2020.

Whether in the forest, in a field of flowers, or overlooking the seaside from the cliffs, we see the landscape as it is: vast, rich, and powerful. We can sense the time it would take to hike to the distant hills, or the force the white waves carry as they reach the shore. Mortensen cuts through the woodblock the same way that rock formations cut through the sky or water carves out channels. Each work is specific to a true place, the actual season, and a particular moment, but captures a universal awe for nature and its magnitude.

For ‘Lotería de la Vida (The Daily Gamble)’: “This exhibition focuses on the games, the roll of the dice, the lotteries we’re forced to play. Influenced by both European medieval woodcuts and Mexican cultural symbolism developed by artists like José Guadalupe Posada, Rodríguez’s style emphasizes simplicity, clarity, and narrative. His images come from contemporary icons like American cartoons and chicano culture and historical traditions like mythology, surrealism, zodiac signs, and Mexican costumbrismo. A poet at heart, Rodríguez uses the physicality of the printmaking process to write stories in images.

Artemio Rodríguez, ‘Arrogance’, ‘Avarice’ and ‘Wrath’ from Seven Deadly Sins, linocut. Now on view in the gallery and online.
For ‘Lotería de la Vida (The Daily Gamble)’: “In the Seven Deadly Sins series, Uncle Sam is bitten by lust (Attack) and terrorizes the globe with a machine gun (Wrath). The world’s chaos and cruelty are clear in Rodríguez’s images. So is the absurdity.”
