My beautiful, strong, resilient and loving Mom passed away peacefully this morning. She died at home with my baby brother Christopher by her side and surrounded by love.
My mom was a tough lady and she loved hard. She would literally do anything for her family and friends. Her love for me and my brother was fierce and deep. She was a fighter and as many of you know, she had been fighting leukemia for many years and after breaking her hip this past winter she had lost mobility. Last week, She told us she was ready to stop fighting and join my sweet daddy on the other side. And in true fashion, she left on her own terms.
We are devastated but also grateful she is at peace and she can walk again! She is with my father and the ancestors. She can finally rest.
I love you, Momita. I will miss you so much. You were one of the greats and I promise to make you proud.
Mom and the family ask you all to join us at her funeral at The Basilica of Saint Lawrence 97 Haywood Street Asheville, NC this Saturday 11/8 at 11am.

David Ryan Smith (@davidryansmith ) is a COMEDIC MASTER. By taking on Sir Toby in MALVOLIO in the Classical Theatre of Harlem premiere, David had one of the hardest roles in my play. He had to walk the line between a villain and a trickster (with a character that Shakespeare originated now operating in a entirely different world, no less). As a playwright, I feel the responsibility of attempting to maintain a semblance of authority, which requires you don’t laugh uncontrollably at an actor saying your lines every single time they walk on-stage. In that regard, when it came to watching David work, I failed both miserably and gloriously. David made me laugh so hard every day in rehearsal (to the point I felt disruptive). It was heartening to see MALVOLIO audiences enjoy David’s work as much as I did.
