An agreement has been completed for Xabi Alonso to become the new Chelsea manager.
Alonso, 44, visited London early last week and has accepted the opportunity, with a four-year contract now being finalised and an announcement expected imminently.
Alonso was the club’s top target throughout, and the former Real Madrid head coach wanted the Stamford Bridge move.
Jose Mourinho is set to meet Real Madrid president Florentino Perez next week with an expectation he will complete a deal to become the club’s new head coach.
Sources briefed on the situation, speaking on the condition of anonymity to protect relationships, indicated Mourinho has already conveyed to some people at Benfica that he is leaving.

Manchester United and Michael Carrick have reached a broad agreement for the Englishman to become the club’s permanent head coach.
Work is continuing between all parties to finalise contracts for Carrick and his backroom staff, after a two-year deal with the option to extend by 12 months was proposed by the club to the former midfielder.
Nottingham Forest plan to show their faith in Vitor Pereira by handing the head coach a new long-term contract.
There has been speculation that another managerial change could take place at the City Ground this summer - but sources have insisted that the club hierarchy and players are happy with Pereira.
The internal atmosphere is said to be extremely healthy at present, so the priority is for both parties to sit down and negotiate a fresh deal.
There is also a desire, as things stand, to keep hold of all of key players in the summer transfer market.
"As we've said with Manchester United and previously Arsenal some years ago, somebody is going to get this right. I think there would be a lot of cause for optimism there."

Arsenal defender Ben White is expected to miss the rest of the season with a right knee ligament injury.
White, 28, was forced off in the first half of Arsenal’s Premier League victory over West Ham United on May 10. Mikel Arteta said after the match that “he doesn’t look good at all”.
Chelsea are exploring a deal to appoint Xabi Alonso as the club’s new head coach.
The Spaniard is open to the possibility, but at this stage nothing is decided as the process to hire a permanent successor to Liam Rosenior continues, with outgoing Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola also a strong contender.
Alonso, 44, has been out of management since being sacked by Real Madrid on January 12 and replaced by the club’s reserve team coach Alvaro Arbeloa.
