Central Park coyotes Romeo and Juliet howling in response to a siren this winter.
@jacquelineuws and I are excited to return to the @the_explorers_club next Monday, Feb 9 to talk coyotes with @dodai and Chris Nagy from the Gotham Coyote Project.
Dodai wrote the wonderful article about Romeo and Juliet in the New York Times last summer. We enjoyed spending time with her for her reporting and contributing photos to her piece. Her article: /2025/08/19/nyregion/central-park-coyotes.html?unlocked_article_code=1.JVA.jRP3.lyDq9JwKdtCR&smid=nytcore-ios-share
Chris has been a leader in coyote research, education and advocacy in the New York City metro area since he co-founded the Gotham Coyote Project in 2010. We got to know him in advance of writing our own article about the coyotes for Smithsonian Magazine: /science-nature/in-a-milestone-for-manhattan-a-pair-of-coyotes-has-made-central-park-their-home-180986892/
More details about the talk here: /calendar-of-events/an-evening-with-the-central-park-coyotes-and-beyond/
Jackie and I look forward to telling our favorite stories about Romeo and Juliet, with photos and videos we haven’t shared before! Hope to see you there if you can make it. If you can’t, the talk is expected to be streamed online.

As you may have already seen, Flaco the Eurasian eagle-owl has passed away. I am sad beyond words. Flaco defied the odds and made quite a life for himself in the city over the past year. Along the way he came to mean so much to so many, including me.
I hope that we will eventually be able to learn something about Flaco’s death that can be helpful to other raptors in the city.

I miss her sweet, curious face and big personality. Barry, the Central Park barred owl, sizing up a squirrel in Persimmon Meadow last year.

I’ve watched this Eastern cottontail rabbit grow up from a wee baby. Good to see he or she is still doing well.

I, for one, welcome our new magnolia warbler overlords! They are plentiful in the area at the moment.

Common yellowthroat warblers typically forage in low vegetation and brush and are therefore considered skulky. But they actually pop out into the open quite often, like this lovely male perched on a fence.

Common yellowthroat warbler striking a pose. It was unusual to see this little diva overhead in the trees rather than where we are accustomed to seeing them, down low.

Every birder has some regularly occurring migratory bird species that are strangely frustrating. One of mine is the yellow warbler, which I tend to see high and in poor view. Finally, a good look the other day!

You will find this picture of a male hooded warbler under the dictionary definition of aura.

Happy Mother’s Day! This is an old favorite I haven’t posted before: a mother great horned owl guards her nestling after chasing away a red-tailed hawk.

The trees are alive with birdsong! Happy World Migratory Bird Day!
