i wrote this during a really heavy season of my life.
a relationship ended right before a solo trip to Turkey… a trip that wasn’t supposed to be solo.
while i was there, trump had just been re elected.
thousands of miles away and i still couldn’t escape reminders of home.
three different people asked if i owned a gun when they found out i was american.
it reminded me that no matter where i go, my identity comes with me.
when i got back to nyc, i was stopped and frisked.
that moment sat with me for a long time.
months later, trying to make sense of all of it… MIA came out.
a song about loving something that doesn’t always love you back.

when my manual walked out of the door
