If you know us then you know we love music! Music is you, us, all of us!! This Friday, we’re celebrating Black music from the past, present, and future with a talented lineup of performers, vendors, food by @jamminsmokehouse and DJ @cooplemoderne at the historic Russell Theatre with @russellplaceofpromise Russell Neighborhood Homecoming!! Inspired by the legendary Idle Hour, a popular spot where Black musicians from across the country performed during the 1920’s–60s, right here in the Russell Neighborhood. We stand on the shoulders of those who came before us, who built platforms, made space, and fought to keep the music alive. And now it’s up to us to keep it going. We got Friday night plans. RSVP at the link in our bio!! See ya there. 🫶🏾

top 5 lists have been a staple in hip-hop since its inception…so i wanted to share my top 5 favorite hip-hop magazine covers (that i own)…and why… 1. i was a kanye stan. i had a friend who was a big fan of 50 and swore that i was tweaked for thinking kanye could outsell 50…and his defense that was a slightly wild take at the time but low and behold…kanye outsold him and that nigga 50 continued to rap. smh. this cover is such a specific marker of time for me. 2. so i have just about every magazine cover that kanye ever did pre LOP and this is to me his most iconic and controversial…for obvious reasons. they wasn’t seeing the vision on this one. this sparked one of his many cancellations. 3. do i really need to break this one down??? it speaks for itself but it means so much to me to have been gifted this by my big cousin who had a box full of vintage vibe magazines. welcome to death row! 4. this was kind of the beginning of the boom of the blog era. this issue was so inspiring and refreshing. they’ve been chasing this level of roster since. granted not all these dudes went on to be what we maybe expected but a great deal of them created their own lanes. plus it folded out to reveal the other “freshman”. there’ll never be another like this class. 5. this cover isn’t necessarily my favorite but this issue changed my whole life. i’ll spare u the long story but essentially when my dad asked me at 12 years old what i wanted to do with the rest of my life it was based around the “99 careers in hip-hop”. i remember circling the job descriptions like it was a help wanted ad in the newspaper. plus i wanted to make beats that sounded like the neptunes. and the rest is history. what’s your top 5?…u pick the category. okay. thanks. love u. bye.

I come from sharecroppers, steel mill workers, teachers aids, and hustling preachers. My paternal grandparents didn’t even make it past 3rd and 5th grade. I graduated Summa Cum Laude, honors in both of my majors, and top 10% of my class. AND IM GOING TO YALE!!!! God has been better than good to me. He’s been better than good to my whole family because this work is just as much for them as it is for me. I didn’t know what to post or say to recap such an incredible day but like always my big brother saved the day. @davewillchris suprised me by making this beautiful video that i will cherish forever. To everyone who showed up, who watched from home, who congratulated me and celebrated me near and far: thank you so much, thank you for making May 10th one of the best days of my life. To God be the glory. Sadie, Nathanial, Daisy, Weasie, Zeke, Jasper, and Viola. I am nothing without my lineage, I AM my lineage. I know i’m making you proud. I can feel it every day. Please continue to guide and protect me as I make my way, I promise to never stray from you and more importantly from God. Sincerely, Derby City’s Finest, Jasmine E. Christopher, Bachelor of Arts.
