I was very sorry to hear of James Gadson’s recent passing. I was lucky enough to work with him one time, recording a couple songs for a Keith Urban record. They wanted to record to analog tape, which was a great idea; that was the sound!, and James loved it. The session was in EastWest Studio 3, the “Pet Sounds” room. Looked like his drum heads were from 1972. A truly wonderful guy.

But seriously, I love this record and am thrilled to have been a part of it (recorded and mixed). After some of the file-shuffling overdubs of the pandemic, we were able to return to the best way to record, a band in a room all playing together. And what a band; Steve Jordan, Pino Palladino, Leon Pendarvis, Larry Campbell, and Chris Bruce. And of course Bettye herself, a true artist and unique interpreter of song. I love this band and love this woman, she sings and tells it like it is. There are loads of reviews out there that can opine better than me about the music, I can only say I fully enjoyed making, and continuing to listen to this album.
