Usually when we’re in the process of booking an artist or band we invite you into the studio so you can see the space and get to know us. We feel that this is helpful because it allows you to visualize yourself in the studio and that builds peoples confidence for the big day! One of the most common questions we get during these meetings is about whether to use a click track or not. Honestly from our perspective, the use of the metronome is almost clicking on an effect processor or not. Using a click creates a sound and a feeling that is reflected in the music. The question is ‘is that the right sound’ for the song… Using a click track generally gives a recording a poised and grounded feel. While you can play with as much dynamics as you can muster up, generally it feels more relaxed. It’s a familiar sound since so much music today is produced to a click track. Is that right or wrong??? Forgoing the click track can bring more energy and excitement to most tracks if the band is HOT ie: drums and bass are really solid. The track may speed up along the way, but generally, we like that feeling so why not!? Is speeding up bad??? Listen to some of your FAVORITE records… chances are the band is moving a lot!… Some people struggle to play well with a click. Others sound terrible without it. Ultimately we take the decision based on what we hear through the speakers and what makes sense for the song. That’s the only thing that matters. It’s a tool to be very mindful of. You can really wreck a song by choosing wrong… Hey!
