Hey, Iâll be presenting at this weekendâs MacEwan Drum Symposiumâa student-led initiative that is bringing in a variety of drummers and percussionists to share ideas and music! This event is free so if you are in Edmonton this weekend, this is the place to be!! #itsfree!!
Hey!
Iâll be leading a group of amazing musicians on Friday June 30th at the Chateau Lacombe as part of the 2023 Edmonton Jazz Festival! We start at 10 pm and the band features Chris Andrew, piano; Aretha Tillotson, bass; and Jeremiah McDade, tenor sax. Original music and some older favourites. Give the drummer someâlook out!! Info: /schedule/dave-laing-quartet/.
Hey! Come down to the @yardbirdsuiteyeg tonight for a @bentriverrecords event! Iâll be playing with guitarist Jim Headâs group doing tunes from his latest release âPrismaticâ. Jimâs music is amazing and challenging so the drummer might have a ârapid unscheduled disassemblyâ on the bandstand! The band will include Chris Andrew, pno; Aretha Tillotson, bass; and Kelly Jefferson, tenor sax. The fun starts at 730 and the cover charge is by donation to the Macewan Student fund.
Two performances today (matinee and evening) with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and guest PJ Perry conducted by Allan Gilliland including Jim Head, Tom Van Seters, and Paul Johnston.
Maestro PJ Perry looking over the tunes before we begin our two night stay at the Yardbird Suite tonight and tomorrowâwith Bob Tildesley, tpt; Chris Andrew, pno; and Paul Johnston, bass. Câmon down!!
Had a great couple of days recording the fabulous music of Jim Head. Along for the ride was Chris Andrew, Kelly Jefferson and Remi Jean Leblanc. Paul Johnston manning the console for the good sounds. Will advise when itâs ready to go!
My golf student, Donny Kennedy, nominated me to do the â10 albums that had an impact on youâ thingy and so check out âBelaneyâs Secretâ: a quartet session featuring Donny and pianist Jeff McLeod that has their great writing and playing! And now I nominate @repadamschiff to share his fav jazz records. đđŒ
QUID PRO QUO literally translates as âquidââ-âPayâ (cash or money in general); âproââ-âProfessionalâ (experienced or accomplished; also heavy or killinâ);
âQuoââ-âjazzâ (fr. Greek âÏολâ meaning âwhaâ but also âwhoaâ) Thus, âPay for killinâ jazz.â The expression also highlights the long association between Ancient Rome and the USA, and their shared love of jazz. Tonight and tomorrow at Upstairs with Donny Kennedy, Andre White. Al Walkington, myself, and guest bari saxophonist Paul Nedzela up from NYC.
SOUND ON!! We wrapped up the @samkirmayer organ trio tour yesterday and it was a blast from start to finish. Big thank you to Sam and @benpatersonmusic for all the fun and to all the friends, old and new, who came out. Hopefully we get a chance to do it again before too long!
Hey!! As we wrap up the western Canadian portion of our tour, hereâs your chance to FINALLY demonstrate your knowledge of local fire hydrant design and win a copy of @samkirmayer âs CD âHigh and Lowâ with NYCâs @benpatersonmusic on organ and myself on drums. All you have to do to guess which western Canadian city or town these fire hydrants are from. The first person to get all 8 correct (or whoever gets the most correct) will win. Just enter your guess in the comment section below. Maximum of 50 entries per person. Good luck!!!
