A STORY ABOUT SYNCHRONICITIES: I only met Darwyn Cooke once. It was at
@comic_con in 2012, the year I worked the
@imagecomics /Shadowline booth as a guest of
@jimvalentinoshadowline and sold everything on the table. Literally. As a result -- and also because he's just a good dude -- Jim took me to a few different dinners and functions, including an established gathering of a lot of older comics pros after the show on Sunday. At one point when I stepped outside the bar to get some fresh air I found myself almost face-to-face with Darwyn, who was standing under a lone streetlight and smoking a cigarette, creating a silhouette that made him look like he was peeled right out of one of his own comic panels. We chatted for a minute -- well, he chatted, mainly, telling an unprompted and grousing-but-tongue-in-cheek-style story about an ex -- before flicking the butt away when he was finished and going back inside. It was an amazing experience I'll never forget. Darwyn was good people. Fast forward to today, almost 10 years to the day after Darwyn passed, and I just received this book from my dear friend and frequent collaborator
@dave.does.comics . It's one I've been wanting to get for a while, and Dave gifted it to me rather than sell it to me, as it was from an amazing friend of his named Rob who he recently lost. I only met Rob once, too, and the high caliber of his positive spirit and energy was palpable. He was clearly very good people. Like Darwyn. Like Jim. Like Dave. Sometimes you just know... and sometimes once is enough to know all you need to know. Thank you, Darwyn. Thank you, Jim. Thank you, Rob. Thank you, Dave. #darwyncooke
