Camellia Japonica, the Rose of Winter, is native to southern Japan where it is known as tsubaki and grows in forests at altitudes of 300 to 1,100 meters. The plant was brought to Australia in 1826 by Alexander Macleay. After it arrived, it became a really popular flower in gardens across Sydney and Melbourne. Itโs been a favorite in Japan for centuries and was first described by a European traveler named Engelbert Kaempfer in the late 1600s.
