Here's a timelapse @shaunchristianscott took of me doing a head and shoulder lifecast of him this evening for @monster_kid_productions next feature film, "My Blade is Your Salvation". He was a great, patient subject!

Thanks again to @arkadincinema for having me out yesterday to talk about monster-making and other special makeup effects-related things! And thanks to everyone who came out to it!
One of the stickers I snagged yesterday now has a proud place on my sculpting bench!
Come see me at @arkadincinema this Saturday, October 25th at 4pm! I'll be talking about some of these effects/tests and more!
This Saturday, Arkadin is having a Monster Mash Movie Marathon, featuring Mad Monster Party (a personal childhoor favorite of mine!), 1933's The Invisible Man, 1986's TerrorVision, An American Werewolf in London (my favorite film of all time!), and The Mummy Theme Park! Tickets for the marathon are $22 and can be purchased through Arkadin's site now or on-site (availability permitting) the day of.
HOWEVER - In between The Invisible Man and TerrorVision, from 4pm to 5pm, I'll be talking special makeup effects and my part of the event is FREE!
Videos shown are -
• A clip from an AMCO Ranger commercial I made the giant ants for
• A slit throat application and filming demo we did for Hysteria fest earlier this summer
• A movement test for the understructure of an unfinished monster for the upcoming Reaper Road

If you're free this Sunday at 1:30 to 5:00, come out to the Saint Louis Public Library Central branch and watch An American Werewolf in London, then after that, stick around and hear me go on and on probably way too enthusiastically about the groundbreaking effects in the movie, their historical significance, and the techniques used for pulling all of them off!
This is my favorite film, and the film that got me interested in becoming a makeup effects artist, so I'll have plenty to say!
It's free, but you have to register at the link in my bio!

44 years ago today, An American Werewolf in London released in theaters. It's an amazing film, my favorite film, and I've spoken at length about what an inspiration it (and specifically @therickbaker 's work in it) has been to me.
What does that have to do with this picture, you ask? Well, this is a picture of a tattoo I recently got. It's the title creature from a 1971 film called Octaman. Octaman is a fun watch for maybe the wrong reasons, but it's a favorite of mine. I got this tattoo for a couple of reasons. The first is that Octaman is something the amazing @manda_lion81 and I share a love for. The second, though, is what is pertinent to this post.
As inspiring as Rick Baker's work on American Werewolf and countless other films is, it's also a lot to try and live up to. Just like any artist, I have to remember not to compare myself to others and only compare myself to my past self. It's the only way to measure growth, after all. But even still, it can be daunting seeing the work of the best people in your field and wondering if you'll ever come close to being that good. Rick Baker will always be a better artist than me, but if I could be 1/16th as good as he is, I'd be happy!
Octaman was Rick Baker's first feature film. The creature suit is charming and competently made, but it wasn't even Baker's design if I recall correctly, and it was far from the consistent heights he would reach with his later works. Octaman came out a decade before An American Werewolf in London; a decade before people really fully sat up and took notice of what Baker could do (which would have happened sooner if his contributions to the De Laurentiis King Kong hadn't been downplayed).
The second reason I got this tattoo was as a reminder. Everyone has a first film. Everyone starts somewhere. The only way to get better at something is to work at it.
Now go rewatch An American Werewolf in London.
