Afterword
Good evening everyone, thanks for coming. My name is Daria Berg. I'm an art and fashion photographer from St Petersburg, Russia.
My path in art began with painting. Mom instilled in me the love for drawing, and as early as 5 years old I was painting still lifes, creating compositions, trying to paint portraits of my nearest and dearest. At that time, I had not thought about photography. I got fascinated by the world of photography quite recently (two years ago, when I was finishing school). Since then I have not parted with the camera. I still remember my feeling when I took my first shot: My hands were trembling so much that I thought nothing would work out.
It was then that my great love was born, but it brought along the kind of fears that often stop newbies (how to do it properly? what if I'm not understood?) Fortunately, I quickly got rid of such thoughts. My painting teacher says, "Don't be like everyone else. Believe yourself." This tip helped me.
It was important for me to find my niche, so that my photos would find their own face and become recognizable. I spent many sleepless nights analyzing works of art.
I wanted to bring to photography what I focused on in painting.
I've always loved working with colour. I don’t like simple colours, they don’t have the depth that you want to peer into, so I chose a “dusted” colour spectrum that is close to monochrome. I also devote a lot of my time to the study of chiaroscuro in photography, because light is its soul. Without light, photography does not breathe and does not live.
For me, photography is much more than just a beautiful picture and a favorite job. It is art. The ability to create your own worlds, to manipulate time. Each shot receives its story and is carefully prepared. Very often I create costumes and jewelry myself, and set the scenery. For me, the preparation process is no less exciting.
At this exhibition, I want to show you my world: the fairy-tale world of shadows and moving highlights, brooding muses and high fashion. A world where photography merges with painting.
