Nightingale š¶ while on a work trip in Berlin last year, I dragged my colleagues on an early morning birding side quest, and saw nightingales for the fist time! I was surprised by howā¦unassuming they look for such a famous bird š like a colourless robin with chestnut coloured tail and wings. But their long and complex song is so memorable and piercingly loud. I was SO happy to hear (and see) them again on a visit to RSPB Pulborough Brooks last month.
I feel like they have a strong cultural significance in the UK, in childrenās books and literature, but in reality they have declined by 90% over the last 50 years, mainly due to habitat loss. In fact, this red listed bird is now so rare that they are outnumbered in the UK by people with the surname Nightingale (approx. 10,000). I hope that changes so more people can hear their song.

Manifesting a goshawk sighting for 2026⦠would love to see one this year. Last March I watched a large grey hawk take down a wood pigeon in flight but didnāt have binoculars or camera with meā¦couldāve been a sparrow hawk but it had a very distinctive white supercilia (feathers above the eye) so Im holding onto the possibility of it being a goshawk!

Peregrine Falcon. I saw my first peregrine of the year last week (carrying a dead pigeon to the rooftops Kings chapel š ). Weāve been lucky to have peregrines in Cambridge over the years, in 2024 I was even luckier to see one of the chicks fledge. For me, they are the best tourist attraction in the city.

Doing a decent job of manifesting some ālifersā this year (there is no listā¦yet). After a first EVER sighting of a little owl two weeks ago near Cambridge, we saw another two today near Peterborough! Also had the joy of bumping into the greater spotted @rocknrollbirder too for a quick birding natter and very cool sighting of a sleeping long eared owl.š¤
