As a BeamNG.Drive content creator for the past six years, it still feels like just yesterday that I began work on my longest desert race course on the Nevada Interstate map.
At the time, it was the longest desert loop in the off-road community. Since then, a few other projects have pushed the boundaries further. The truth is, creating long-distance races while maintaining today’s high standards for terrain detail — including realistic ruts, surface variation, and micro details — is incredibly challenging due to the relationship between map size and performance.
That said, over the years I’ve learned a lot about map-making and discovered that raw detail isn’t the only thing that makes a course fun and memorable. Johnson Baja is a perfect example — its clever use of themes, elevation changes, and smart design proves that creativity can deliver an authentic desert racing feel even in a more compact area.
While it doesn’t feel that long ago to me, it’s now been several years since the bar was truly set for long-distance maps, and nearly as long since a proper long-distance race was hosted. That’s why Cam’s Maps and I have decided it’s time to revisit the Nevada Interstate project.
We’re planning a complete overhaul: scrapping the old trails and building a brand-new desert loop that we hope will exceed 75 miles. We also have a solid plan for much higher terrain detail than Nevada currently offers (not quite full ruts yet, but a clear step up in quality and immersion). The goal is to introduce fresh themes and concepts, along with new vegetation and filler objects the community hasn’t seen before.
So here’s my question to the community:
Would you actually use and enjoy a map like this? Is there still strong interest in big, ambitious, long-distance desert racing maps?
This would be a massive undertaking that will require a lot of time and support to do right. Before we commit, we want to hear from you — is this something the community truly wants?
