Among an array of works on paper, ‘LUNCH’ by Michael McGregor includes nine paintings that show the range of McGregor’s practice. While his works on paper are often bursting with an energy of immediacy and spontaneity, paintings like 𝘚𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 (left) and 𝘓𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘩 𝘋𝘢𝘵𝘦 (right) as shown in the third photo invite the viewer to slow down and catch a glimpse of the more intimate moments of shared meals and sobremesa - a Spanish tradition of spending time at the table after a meal is over. Through layers of charcoal, gesso, oil paint, oil sticks, and collage, the loosely rendered glasses, plates, and fragments of meals emerge and disappear in rhythm.
