Was honored to be invited by the awesome @backtothemusicnet to answer some questions. It’s a relatively young site filled with simple prompts and awesome responses from cool djs/selectors/curators/nerds like me. Read me pontificate nostalgically about @kimwildeofficial Steve Reich the Lines, D.F. And Pam, Cocktail Naïf, Tom Verlaine, Robert R Medici, @isolee_music , Patrick Cowley, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Puno Donaggio and more! Link in bio!
Ahead of tuesday night's Q&A after Italo Disco Legacy, figured it would be fun—and self-indulgent—to revisit Tricia Romano's profile of me for the Village Voice from January 2005. Titled "Italo Don", subtitled "DJ Dan Selzer of NYHappenings reveals his dark secrets." Featuring a photo of me taken at Bar 13 with the caption "Selzer: More gay Italian shit".
This was when nyhappenings only had 3,000 subscribers, not the 7,000 it had at it's peak.
When Tricia asked me "What do you think you are most known for?" I answered "Getting post-punk hipsters into italo-disco." That was 21 years ago. And I'm still at it.
In today’s namedropping anecdote…I never quite understood why, but Jason Molina gave me this lamp when we moved out of the house we shared junior year at Oberlin. The infamous Big 5. I saw him play hundreds of times but only joined him once when he showed me how to play Kraftwerk’s The Model on an old air organ to accompany him.
