Ever tasted true expertise? Do you consider yourself an “expert”? Claims are easy, but proof is rare.
Many ophthalmologists avoid deep specialization. They fear fewer opportunities, disrupting peer ties, feeling unprepared, or losing variety. But these insecurities only hold them back from true expertise.
Specializing isn’t limiting; it’s elevating. Focus builds depth. Put two equally smart people on different paths—one broad, one narrow—and the second will always develop deeper expertise. They’ll think and work with greater focus, charging more, working less, and doing what they love.
At #AAO2024, @danreinstein , José Barraquer Medal recipient, was asked by Elizabeth Yeu, MD, about his motivation. His answer? “Insecurity.”
We all feel it, but the difference is pushing through it. True expertise comes from commitment, saying “No” to many other options, and not waiting for the perfect time. Are you ready? You don’t have to specialize, but remember that each choice has a tradeoff.
What an extraordinary experience - Jessie J sitting in the audience of our “Laser Blended Vision Band” gig. Went up to her during the interval and asked if she’d like to sit in. She said yes!
Totally improvising a blues she KILLED IT! As did the rest of the band Morris Pleasur Mark Mondesir Tim Lapthorn Shanti Paul Jayasinha
THAT IS JAZZ
#Presbyopia Forefront Refractive Surgery Course 2026 - Presbyopia is the universal refractive condition of human ageing, affecting essentially every person who lives long enough, and yet the emotional and existential burden of its onset has been remarkably understudied compared with its optics.
🏛️ The Story Behind London Vision Clinic
Started by Professor Dan Reinstein and Craig Engelfried with just a handful of staff, #LondonVisionClinic has grown into a leading eye care clinic on Harley Street. From day one, the focus was simple: do everything possible for every eye 👁️
Innovation has always been at our heart. We’ve developed new surgical techniques, explored the science behind complications, and guided engineering advances to ensure the safest and most effective treatments. Many of our former fellows are now leading clinics around the world 🌍
At #LondonVisionClinic, we combine expertise, research, and a passion for patient care to deliver the highest standard of treatment.

🎷 Meet Dan Reinstein – Surgeon and Saxophonist!
Before becoming an eye surgeon, Dan was a musician 🎹. He started piano at four, switched to saxophone at 14, and even studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. He describes that year as almost more intense than medical school!
Today, Dan balances a life of precision in the operating theatre with music in the evenings, performing at the 606 Club in Chelsea. Not everyone knows he’s both a skilled surgeon and a talented musician – a true master of both art and science 🎶👨⚕️.

Presbyopia debates don’t only happen in lecture halls. Sometimes they happen in the sauna at The European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS).
From basic science and optics, to clinical evidence, to how we explain options to patients — solving presbyopia requires many perspectives across the entire patient journey.
It was a heated debate with Dan @danreinstein about corneal presbyopia solutions in the sauna. Progress happens when these viewpoints meet in open, fair exchange of knowledge. Overseen by the great sauna master Prof Suphi Tanari
In the end, we’re all working toward the same goal: helping patients maintain great vision at all distances.

Tuesday 10 March 8pm: Dan Reinstein 🎷
American-born saxophonist Dan Reinstein @danreinstein first began playing at the old 606 Club when a medical student in the 1980’s. He returned to the US in the early 90s to become one of the world’s leading laser eye surgeons (he’s now Professor Reinstein). But when he returned to London, it was great to hear his fluent, classic hard-bop, muscular sax playing again and the rest, as they say, is history. Dan & his quartet ( @timlapthorn Tim Lapthorn-piano; Steve Rose-bass & Winston Clifford-drums) have performed here for the last 20 years and still going!
“…impressive hard-bop saxophonist” Time Out
