We have just finished laying out the final spring planting at @stjohnscam following completion of our proposals for decanalisation of Bin Brook, the stream that runs through the Backs of several Cambridge colleges. Unlocking this section of the watercourse by removing the concrete retaining walls gave us the opportunity to create a renewed natural riverine environment, comprising woodland edge and meadow to waterside plantings using British indigenous species. Providing habitat for local fauna, including water birds, water voles and otters, there are also a number of dwell spaces for students and staff. The scheme includes the design of a new bridge across Bin Brook to improve site accessibility. A new garden with plants selected for their resilience to the drier conditions that have become more prevalent in this part of the country, offers a wider range of plants to strengthen future biodiversity. Thank you to Master of St. John’s @heather_j_hancock for commissioning us and getting stuck into the planting and to Head Gardener @david_austrin and his team and @stewartlandscape for all of their hard work to realise the scheme. We are looking forward to seeing it evolve.

Thank you @houseandgardenuk for including us in their Top 25 Garden Designers. We couldn’t do what we do without our fantastic studio team, wonderful clients and a host of other collaborators and consultants including ecologists, arboriculturists, water specialists, fabricators, contractors and gardeners to name a few. So this accolade is for everyone who gives us the opportunity and contributes to helping us make the landscapes and gardens we do.

@nigel.dunnett was in the very swing of his work and its positive reach and we are saddened to hear of his time being cut short so prematurely this last week. Several people who have worked for us at DPS studied under Nigel at Sheffield University, were inspired, learned well and were given good life tools as budding landscape designers. His work was his life long passion and he will be sorely missed. Our deepest condolences to his nearest and dearest.

An exciting day at the Garden Museum, as the first planting begins on Lambeth Green! Lambeth Green is our project to transform 5.3 acres of public realm adjacent to the Garden Museum into a series of interconnected public green spaces, including a landmark new public garden. As @transportforlondon are re-shaping the Lambeth Bridge junction outside the museum, 300 square metres of what was once road and hard surfacing will become garden and trees. The new landscape, designed by @danpearsonstudio , will give residents and volunteers places to garden, including apprenticeships in horticulture for local young people. These will be the gardeners of the future. Find out more about our plans for Lambeth Green on our website.

A return to @torrecchiavecchia for our next input in moving the estate forward with @carlottamontefoschi of Studio Spin, our collaborators in this part of the project. Setting out the elliptical ‘rough lawns’ down by the lake and below the troglodyte caves where the ancients had once hollowed an oval window. In spring we planted cork oaks and groves of cercis and Cornus mas around which the paths will describe the clearings. Venus’ Hair adiantum on the cool cliffs and the smell of calaminth in the dusty meadows. At the end of the day in the half light, setting out 80 more cork oaks amongst the elders for future generations. Feeling connected and letting the land lead the way.

It’s a pleasure to be receiving plants from Olivier Filippi for key species in our Tuscan project. Long, ribbed containers to promote deep roots and tightly clipped tops which will grow away fast with strong roots seeking moisture.

Fantastic light on our Sussex site visit today. Back to review progress and continue planning the next phase of landscape works. The planting establishing well in its second season of growth and the new design sitting comfortably and gently with the Lutyens architecture.

We've been busy in the hydrangeas again! This week, we started underplanting over 400 hydrangeas along the HaHa-Walk, spanning from the Orchard, Rock Garden, Japanese Garden, Scented Garden, into the Rose Garden. Our combination, designed by @danpearsonstudio and @coyotewillow , includes Brunnera macrophylla, Pachyphragma macrophyllum, Galium odoratum, and more. Great job, @lowther_castle garden team, especially in the rain! We'll celebrate big milestones this autumn, like planting the last of 4000 pots along the HaHa. Thank you. We're adding composted greenwaste to ease the clay's wet clogginess. Let's see how the forget-me-not and pennycress fare, because we have lost them in previous wet years. August and September are one of our best planting times, soil is still warmish, and plants have about six weeks to get their feet into the ground before the constant winter wet arrives at the end of October. #plantingtime #excitingtimes #perennials #creatingnewgardens #lowthercastle #autumn #cumbria
