The dreaded skirt of clay. The key to using this clay is to press the clay it into the vase against the wheel head with your knuckle and then… push the cylinder outward from the inside over that hand, to then lift up that clay - keeping that separation between your fingers. Having the right distance between the wheel head and the base of your cylinder also helps here. Too much clay on the inside makes it hard to get the right distance between your fingers to do an effective pull. #wheelthrownpottery #potterytips #wheelthrownceramics #howtopottery #wheelthrown #potterylove #potteryvideos #clayartist

Not saying my younger self woulda taken the advice! I got a lot of good ceramics advice when I was younger that I never listened to. That I’ve only come to really appreciate now. Also I still reserve the right to start making huge vases at any time if my ego starts to feel weak haha. . #wheelthrownpottery #ceramicart #handmadecup #potterylove #potteryinspiration #wheelthrownceramics #handmade

The process of throwing and carving into large vases depends primarily on being able to keep them very in center. For most work on the wheel that means throwing well but then drying the vase very slowly and even. With a perfectly round vase you can easily make it out of center again with a light draft on one side so while I trim I wrap the whole vase in a cardboard box to keep the sides drying evenly, sometimes even slowly spinning inside the boxed enclosure to make sure everything dries perfectly. . #wheelthrowing #cermaicstips #sfartist #ceramicartist #pottery

A few new 6 lbs vases. This has been my favorite size to throw recently, there is a very nice balance in size and the pots seem to work well as decor in most spaces around this size. I’m suppose to be making tons of cups for the next drop… and I am but I’ve decided I need to make at least 1 vase a week because I don’t like to go too long without throwing larger forms. . #pottery #wheelthrowing #decorideas #homestudio #ceramicartist

The book In Praise of Shadows by Jun’ichirō Tanizaki is just on design aesthetics but it begs the question, what is too far. The author would likely sacrifice all progress and efficiency for pure vibe and while I’m somewhere in the middle I think I do lean more toward art over function at least when it comes to ceramics. . #handmadeceramics #designaestetics #inpraiseofshadows #archdesign #ceramicartist

Late nights in the studio last week finishing one drop and starting to work on the next. Gonna take a few days to make some pots for myself since the studio always feel bare after these drops and I want some big display pieces. Then I plan to start churning out some cups and maybe a few mugs for the next drop. . #sfartists #ceramicartist #potterybusiness #handmadedecor #interiorsinspiration

All ready for tomorrows drop. It’s been a good few months of making. I started the year off kinda weird with a lot of flopped pots after the Christmas break. I always worry that if I step away from the wheel for too long I will lose my touch and that kinda happened but I think it was more of an issue with ego as I came back expecting to be able to throw without trying and no matter how good you get there is no room for impatience and a lack of focus. So I went back to my notes and 6lbs of clay for a while and that ended up being really helpful as I refined some of my techniques and I think I’m throwing better than ever before now. Very humble, slowly, and delicate. So that’s a long way of saying check out all the cool vases I made this season! Tomorrow at 3pm pst, thanks as always for the support. . #ceramicartist #pottery #wheelthrownceramics #designerdecor

Shape, line, and shadow. The new collection drops next Sunday at 3pm pst. As always, this collection started with a lot of drawing. I’ve found myself increasingly attached to sketching as part of my process. Looking back at my work, I think it has really informed the way I make things. The confidence of a line on paper, the way a sharp graphite pencil holds an edge, the weight of shading, the obvious feel of a balanced shape in white space, that’s what I’m always trying to get into the clay. I sit with a sketchbook directly in front of the wheel, often splattering the drawings with slip. I want the finished piece to feel like the sketch feels. Decided. I look for ideas that hold up to the test of those simple lines, and then in their final form, the test against the hard warm light of the studio. It’s a success only when the shapes of the shadows cast on the wall are just as interesting as the sketch itself. Not everything made the cut, but the work in this collection comes in only its most essential form, reduced down to clean deliberate lines. . #ceramicart #ceramicartist #pottery #homedecorideas #handmadepottery

I’ve tested a few variations of the cup at this point, some larger as well that didn’t work out becuase as you scale the design, the more you need to facet off the sides and ends up being a bit of a clunky large brick that I need to throw. At this stage it might work as a tea cup or maybe some kind of small espresso cup, but I might need to go slightly larger. - . #ceramicartists #handmadecup #designprocess #wheelthrown #faceted

6 lbs of stoneware. Easily my personal favorite vase this year. People in pottery often say it doesn’t matter if a vase is a little out of center because it will never be spinning again in someone’s home. But for me, technical mastery and perfection on the wheel IS the art and is what I strive for. And the carved lines on my work attempt to represent how the throwing process went on the wheel. The vase might never spin again, but the clean repeating lines that orbit the vase are a permanent reminder of exactly how in center the form was when it was born. A simple autograph in time paying its respect to process. . #wheelthrowing #ceramicartist #pottery #handmadework #designprocess
