This week I had the privilege to work with Alvaro Enciso , known as "The Crossman." He has created over 2200 crosses and planted them in the desert to remember and honor those that have died trying to reach a better life and the American Dream. It was an emotional experience to mark their places of death and realize they had all died alone trying to secure a better life for themselves and their families

Many migrants experience hunger after being deported. For over 25 years, the Green Valley-Sahuarita Samaritans have been helping by preparing and serving meals, starting with El Comedor and, for the last six years, at the shelter and meal center at the Kino Border Initiative. Some deported migrants live on the streets and come to Kino for a meal, a drink, and access to restroom facilities. For many, this may be the only meal they eat all day. My dear friend and fellow volunteer, Rita Danks, prepares meal packages and distributes them so that individuals can have extra food to eat. This is her personal project with the amazing network of volunteers and donors from around the country. If you’d like more info DM her @danksrita

Join @danksrita and me for a transformative five-day course @commongroundonthehill in Maryland that explores the complex narratives of migration and the human experiences at the US-Mexico border. Through powerful documentary screenings, engaging discussions, and hands-on workshops, participants will uncover the personal stories often lost. We will view three impactful documentary films; They Call Me The Cross Man and Shura, which highlight the lives of migrants and the humanitarian efforts supporting them. Participants will learn how to become active welcomers in their communities, foster inclusivity for refugees and newcomers, and learn about two activities that promote awareness and serve a purpose: “The Voices from the Border Quilt Project” and assembling personal hygiene kits for migrants. This course provides a small exhibit emphasizing understanding migrants’ rights and societal contributions while encouraging critical reflection on compassion, resilience, and social justice themes. Together, we will commit to fostering hope and humanity in our communities. Join us for this vital conversation and movement for a more compassionate world.
