I plucked a white rose from someone’s front garden. The roses were pristine but the house no longer existed. Just a chimney and rubble. I tucked the flower in the palm of my hand when a car or person passed by because I felt ashamed for taking something that wasn’t mine. But the rose was for my dad, who died 15 years ago. He loved roses. He stopped and smelled them often, unironically and possibly unaware of the idiom. I stop for roses too. Today, I felt lonely on this walk without my slow-moving buddy, so I started to cry. I miss my Dad. Every day. With tears in my little peepers as a trudged down the hill, I saw this magnificent, singular lavender rose. I’ve never seen a lavender rose. It was “a real smeller” too, as Gary would say. Anyhow. I don’t know anything about anything. But if he was trying to give me a sign, I think was, “I love you, learn how to spell the word lavender and give your Mom a rose for me.” 🪻
