I love what I do. I'm grateful everyday. I love the space in sports I've worked so hard to occupy. It's not perfect. We have more work to do. Those who've come before me did the back breaking hard work. And I hope to leave our space in a better place, too. Joe Kraus, thanks for letting me use my voice.
I grew up on highway 109 and inside the halls of Eureka High School. I'd love to share the story behind these photos & what's shaped me. My dad's name was Larry Wexelman. He was drafted out of Mizzou and into the Marines where he served his country during Vietnam. My dad was a lover, not a fighter. His letters home to his family were unfathomable. They detailed scary moments, benign moments and the desire to come home and go back to school. Which he did. And years later became the guidance counselor at Valley Park High School in my hometown of St. Louis. Like many other Vietnam Veterans, he was exposed to Agent Orange and when I was 12, he was diagnosed with sarcoma. Four years later, during the summer going into my junior year of high school, my dad passed away. When you lose someone unexpectedly early, your entire Universe shatters. I was 16 and my dad was my world. But Eureka wrapped their arms around me. They were like a second parent while my mom ran our home, took care of me in every way possible and was a working mother. She deserves a gold medal for raising me. But my teachers, counselors & coaches always made sure I was OK. I'll never forget their love and care during the worst moments of my life. All I've ever wanted in life is to make sure my dad's name wasn't forgotten and his life & mission at Valley Park weren't in vain. He cared deeply about his students & fought like hell for their futures. They sent him so many loving notes when he was in the hospital. So that's why I started a scholarship in his name. I wanted to stay connected to my dad, who I only knew for 16 years and continue his efforts to help students achieve the education they deserve. These schools and the people in them are near and dear to my heart. The last piece of this endeavor is the outpouring of love and support I receive from friends and family to fund these scholarships. Many people who never knew my dad step up for me and this cause. It restores my faith in humanity and I literally couldn't do it without all of you. Thank you will never ever be enough♥️I'm so grateful for a day home with my family to celebrate these students and my dad 🫶🏼hug your people
All you need is albolene oil, a microwave and some TLC. Stubby Clapp spent a morning with us to demo how he breaks in the Cardinals gloves. The pride he takes traces back to his dad and his love for defense. St. Louis has one of the best defenses in the league. Stubby and the staff have done an amazing job preparing them all season including glove love.
🫶🏼 @bcbirdball I always have your back and am so thankful @salfrelick shared his connection to Pete Frates and his resilient spirit and legacy ♥️ May is ALS awareness month and we'll keep raising our voices until there's a cure for baseball's disease
