A perpetual calendar is a mechanical system designed to automatically account for the varying lengths of months (28, 30, 31 days) and leap years, typically over a 4-year cycle.
At its core, the mechanism uses a program wheel (or cam) that completes one full rotation every four years (48 months). This cam encodes the length of each month through varying depths or steps. A feeler lever reads this profile continuously and determines how far the date mechanism should advance at the end of each month.
Energy is accumulated during the day and released at midnight via a date-jump mechanism, which can produce: • a normal increment (e.g., 30 → 31), • or a multi-day jump (e.g., 30 → 1, or 28 → 1 in February).
Additional gears synchronize the day, date, month, and often moon phase, ensuring all indications remain aligned. In leap years, the system automatically adds February 29 based on the cam’s programmed cycle.
In essence, a perpetual calendar is a mechanical memory system, capable of displaying the correct calendar indefinitely without manual correction—typically until the year 2100, when Gregorian calendar exceptions require adjustment.

#ongoing project in Japan LAYER ZERO proposes a radical paradigm shift: architecture should not be designed for permanence, but for transformation — to evolve, dissolve, and ultimately become unnecessary. Rather than minimising impact, the project establishes a regenerative relationship with its environment, positioning architecture as an active participant in ecological cycles. The most significant architectural gesture available on this site was not the addition of a building. It was the removal of a previous one, and its replacement by a form of occupation that the site itself proposed.
