This week it was announced that students and educators had been impacted by a data breach involving an online learning platform used in many Australian schools, TAFEs and universities. If your child has has been affected, here are some simple tips to help keep them safer online: 🔒 Review accounts linked to their school email address, including social media and online games. Where possible, update login details and enable multi-factor authentication. 📧 Be cautious of unexpected emails or messages, even if they appear to come from the school. Pause before clicking links or downloading attachments, and contact the school directly if you’re unsure. 💛 Prioritise wellbeing. Having personal information compromised can feel stressful and overwhelming, especially for young people who may not have experienced this before. Staying calm and working through steps together can help build important online safety skills. If your child needs support navigating the emotional impacts of the following the breach, information and advice is available through Kids Helpline. You can find out more information about protecting your identity online from eSafety: https://www.esafety.gov.au/young-people/protecting-your-identity If you are experiencing domestic or family violence and have concerns about this breach and your child’s personal information, support is available through 1800RESPECT. You can also contact your child’s school or education provider to discuss safety options.

As part of developing Australia’s Biggest Child Safety Lesson (ABCSL), our team works directly with primary school-aged children through dedicated focus groups. Across both upper and lower primary groups, these sessions help shape our resources—ensuring they are relevant, age-appropriate and grounded in the real experiences of Australian children. Using visual prompts, we explore what feels safe and unsafe from a child’s perspective. This gives us valuable insight into how children understand safety, and how we can communicate with them in a way that resonates. Keep an eye out 👀 Our 2026 ABCSL resources are on the way…
