Between 2019 and 2025, the sun’s solar cycle reaches its peak, with increased solar activity and negative ionizing radiation in the atmosphere. During these years, the world is experiencing significant political, economic, and military upheavals. According to Russian cosmo-biologist Alexander Chizhevsky, the sun’s cycle influences geopolitical processes: in the first phase, there is a global stagnation (e.g., COVID-19), and in the second phase, with increased solar activity, we witness the development of wars and uprisings.
Inspired by Chizhevsky’s research, the exhibition „Sunburns“ explores the Israeli sun as a shaping force. As photographers, we examine the impact of the local sun on the medium of photography – struggling with sharp contrasts and „burnt“ areas – and its simultaneous effect on the people living under it. The works in the exhibition explore the gap between the fascination with the sun and the violence it brings, inviting viewers to see the sun not only as an aesthetic element but also as a blinding force that reveals the complexity of existence in the place we live.
