Online Auction
December 15th, 2025, 2pm
DANIEL BLAU GALLERY is proud to announce, in collaboration with the Viennese DOROTHEUM, an auction of nearly 150 works of extraordinary photography, spanning three centuries and every dimension of the human experience.
On December 15th, a portion of DANIEL BLAU GALLERY’s storied collection of photographic treasures will be made available for acquisition though public auction in Vienna. From the early, experimental nudes of Louis-Jean-Baptiste Igout’s infant Third Republic France, to the unflinching witness of our own everyday captured in newly-discovered prodigy Manon Martsch’s lens, from the devastation of the Second World War to the endless potential of a sprawling, shining cosmos, the prints found at the Dorotheum this month capture humanity at its rawest and most gorgeous, its greatest and its worst, and always at its most unassailably honest.

We are delighted to announce an exceptional online timed auction this November. This special event was stems the transformation of the renowned German gallery Daniel Blau, which has entrusted us with part of its remarkable photographic inventory to describe and offer for sale to new collectors eager to explore the world of fine photography.
High-quality classic photographs are being offered without reserve and with very gentle starting prices, giving new enthusiasts the opportunity to embark on building a photography collection.
The sale is spread over three days. The three printed catalogs will be available free of charge for buyers of several lots and will soon be available in Senigallia for 25 euros for the curious.
The first day, SALT & PEPPER, plays on a famous pun enjoyed by followers of the Daniel Blau gallery. It features photographic processes—daguerreotypes, paper negatives, salted papers, experimental works by major photographers, magnificent albumen prints with strong Oriental contrasts, cyanotypes, autochromes, and around forty original photographs by Émile Zola, a wonderful theme for a collection.
On the second day, MODERN TIMES, you will discover 200 vintage lots coming directly from Daniel Blau. Highlights include vintage photographs by Weegee, war images by Robert Capa, spectacular color photographs of American atomic explosions, and an epic range of images from both Soviet and American space missions.
As for the third day, WOMEN’S VISION, we are pleased to offer an exceptional selection of original, period photographs by women photographers active in the 20th century. The section also includes more recent works using early photographic processes, along with 19th-century portraits of famous women.
Taking an interest in the entire history of photography and attempting to grasp this immense ocean of knowledge requires endless time, which sometimes discourages potential collectors from beginning. However, by focusing on a specific theme, period, or technique, one can build extraordinary collections..

“Bleu profond, les artistes et l'invention des fonds marins”
Held from June 28 to September 21, 2025, at Les Franciscaines in Deauville, this exhibition explores how artists have imagined and depicted the mysterious underwater world. Curated by Jean de Loisy, it brings together artworks, literature, and scientific artifacts, featuring figures like Jules Verne and Victor Hugo. From mythological coral to surreal sea creatures, the show offers a poetic and visual journey through the deep sea, blending fascination, fantasy, and history.
A special highlight of the exhibition is a private loan from Daniel Blau, who contributes eight antique fish hooks from regions including Tokelau, Hawai'i, the Marquesas, New Zealand and others.
These rare artifacts provide a powerful link between traditional oceanic cultures and the broader artistic exploration of the sea, grounding the exhibition in both history and craftsmanship.
