I've been lucky to see some pretty magical parts of this earth. My shooter/editor reel has been updated to reflect that. When I was a teenager, I wanted to be a photojournalist to make a positive impact. I was told by many people that photography wasn't lucrative, so I took a different path, and ultimately ended up right where I belong: both personally and professionally. My camera is with me wherever I go, and I'm grateful to be able to use both work and leisure time for field shoots with scientists, naturalists, conservationists, and the insanely beautiful landscapes and creatures this planet contains.

Happy Earth Day from this Double Banded Plover/Banded Dotterel patrolling their nest on a beach in Kaikōura, New Zealand. I wish we protected our planet the way this Department of Conservation protects their shorebirds.

A fleeting fairy tale moment. New Zealand’s only native land mammals are bats. Land mammals like this deer were introduced to the island by humans, and had significant negative impacts on the native plants / wildlife. The country is on a mission to become predator and ‘pest’ free by 2050. Deer are considered pests because they consume significant forest resources. That being said, this is the only wild deer I saw on my whole trip. I was starting a 3 hour hike through a beautiful coastal rainforest, heard someone in the bushes, and looked over to see this stunning creature looking back at me. Deer didn’t swim to New Zealand. We brought them there for our own selfish purposes. Wildlife are not the pests. We are.
The most recognizable bird in New Zealand after the Kiwi: the Tūi. A melodious diva as abundant as the incredible calls they make.

The endangered North Island Kōkako. Their South Island cousin had yellow orange wattles and went extinct decades ago. I feel so lucky to have spotted this beauty. Most people on my ferry that day didn’t fare as well.

Look at this tiny sea anemone. There were hundreds of them on the walls and rocky reefs at Oculina Point.

The otherworldly underwater gardens at New Zealand’s Poor Knights Islands. Nobody has lived on these islands since the Māori in the 1800s. The result is a beautiful protected marine reserve.

My first stop in New Zealand was the Muriwai Gannet colony, but I arrived to find the viewpoint track closed for construction. I was able to view a small section of the colony from the beach below, but was much too far away to appreciate them fully. Luckily, there was also a white-fronted tern colony on the side of the towering cliffs, and they looked beautiful hanging out against the cloudy seascape. Swipe for Gannets.
