Oda, my first album, is out now everywhere!! It’s 33 minutes designed as a top to bottom listen. Weaved between the songs are pieces of a conversation that spans 5 years with my mother, the songs were written in parallel over that time. In ways I didn’t expect, this album has changed so many different conversations in my life; with others, with myself, with objects. I hope this album continues to be a place I come back to, to remember the process in the efforts of understanding another through the lens of patience, openness, discomfort, love. This body of work has taught me conversations are places, chairs can be portals, doors—an invitation. All they require is for me to step inside, lean in and listen.

I was asked to write a thought on equity, here is a definition I found online: fairness, impartiality, and justice, often involving customized resources to achieve equal outcomes, rather than identical treatment (equality)
Equity (in music) to me is grounded in reciprocity. That begins with ourselves first: believing in our capabilities, being fair with ourselves through valuing our unique point of view and skillset. This is important in and outside of the studio.
If we treat ourselves with equity, it becomes fertile ground for presence in the spaces we inhabit and abundance in how we share and contribute to the collective dna of the music industry.
Lastly, I’ll add that as a completely independent artist, this path is not easy and can feel depleting—practicing equity with ourselves can feel impossible with the ever changing landscape of this industry (and trying to keep up). It’s exactly why I believe reciprocity is radical in today’s conversations. Slowing down can seem counterintuitive but good things take time.
