NEW PUBLICATION | We’re thrilled for Daniel Shipp on his inclusion in the brilliant new book Exposure: Contemporary Photographers in Australia and New Zealand by Amber Creswell Bell, published by Thames & Hudson.
Working entirely in the studio, Shipp transforms ordinary objects and fleeting moments into intricate worlds built from found materials and sculpted light.
“Light is my first language, and I need precise control over it. I can’t express how deeply I feel it.”
Preferring depth and clarity over blur, his images become more painterly than photographic - a deliberate balance of control and emotion that leaves each work lingering in the mind.

Wrapping up the journal that took me from the original research for SUPER NATURE through until last week. I was more diligent than ever to document my research and development, it made the ride a lot more enjoyable in the long run.
If you’re quick you’ll spot some early tests, some reject images, and some as yet unreleased hero images.
What happens to the spiritual when the algorithmic plays such a big part of how we experience the world right now? I’ve lived long enough to observe how technology has changed the way our brains work, how we relate socially, and how human connection has been lost in an increasingly connected world.
Botanical Inquiry: Super Nature is my visual exploration of this idea. The plants are organic but they are manipulated in unnatural ways. If we reach a point when plants are so far removed from their natural state, what would the world beyond these images look like?
Western Flank Reaction, 2025
In early 2024, I committed time to research and development for the new work. I re-engineered the way I construct the images and experimented with expanding the world. I really played on the tension between beauty and darkness and enjoyed new ways of using light, colour and tones. I think when you get the balance right it feels elegant.
I pushed the plants into more extreme hybrids and unnatural behaviours, balancing this strangeness with a natural opulence and a real sense of life and joy. This manipulation of the natural world unsettles me—it mirrors my anxiety about where we might be headed.
I’ve published my full Q&A with the gallery on my website - link in my bio.
ALSO - I’ll be doing a walk through of my show at Michael Reid Northern Beaches this Sat 24th May 1-2pm. The format is loose and I’ll bring some materials for show and tell. All are welcome.

CONSTRUCTION OF THE IMAGES
“The images you see are made entirely with my own hands and are essentially what comes out of the camera, but there’s an element of cinematic illusion that makes the storytelling possible. ‘The machine’ is what I call the visual system I’ve built in the studio. It’s a physical setup that allows me to construct the image in-camera, but I also think of it as a kind of illusion-making engine—something that collapses space, time, and perspective into a single frame.”
