Hi everyone. Serious talk now. As you have probably heard on the news(or through your Jamaican friends talking about this), Jamaica was hit by the strongest hurricane in recorded history since we have been measuring this stuff. Large swaths of the island has been damaged to levels that can best be described as apocalyptic. The home parish of my maternal family, St. Elizabeth was one of the most severely affected by the storm. That parish is the bread basket of the country (where many of the ingredients for the Jamaican food everyone loves). I have put up for sale a Jamaican set mini-comic that me and @bipolarsexdisorder made for sale on line (link in bio and stories) and i will be donating all the proceeds from the digital sales of that book as well as the proceeds from sales of Joncro releases this week to relief efforts for Jamaica IImplore everyone, if you are able to, to donate to help Jamaica rebuild and to help the people on the island, whether you wanna do that through buying stuff from me this week, or doing so directly. Jamaica has given so much to the world, and we, the Jamaican people, are often an afterthought. If you have ever enjoyed out music, food, our beaches, our slang, our fashion, or anything, please consider donating or contributing in some way. Also, please check on your Jamaican friends if you haven't already. Many of us have been stressed for weeks and could use a hug. You can find the link to donate directly to the Jamaican government by checking out prime minister @andrewholnessjm 's insta page or going to supportjamaica.gov.jm 1st photo cred: @shireenkphotoz

Good news, copies of Zona Del Male (the horror anthology I put out) can be found for sale at the @thebeguiling in downtown Toronto. Ever since I first went there, I wish my mom over 13 years ago (at the original location). I have always wanted to have some of my work on their shelves. Some dreams do come true, i guess. Check out the store if you wanna grab a copy while you are in Toronto.

So. Over the summer, I worked on an article about Haitian-Canadian cinema that doubled as a review for the new documentary "At All Kosts" by Joseph Hillel ( @josephillel ) for the Montreal based magazine @maisonneuvemag . While I am known mostly for music related writing, my interests are somewhat wider than just that. In particular, I have a deep love for the cinema and storytelling traditions of my home region (the Caribbean). So many amazing films and stories are made in the region and by those of us in the various Diasporas. Unfortunately, most of those stories, and films in particular, are ignored by the wider world outside of our communities. I am so happy that i was able to write about a subject so dear to my heart. For the article, I interviewed Hillel, direcor @henripardo , and actor/perfomer/educator Mirelle Metelus (i thank them for speaking with me and sharing their insights). Physical copies are available now, so I encourage you to pick up a copy or 2 if you are in Montreal or subscribe to Maisonneuve to further support the journalistic fabric of this country. Photos of me by @shireenkphotoz Thanks to an anonymous friend for sending me photos of her physical issue since I am not in mtl.

Fantastic news. Cranberries, a collaboration between me and @izziemack has just been released via @crucialcomix . The comic is a semi-autobiographical story about my life and a non-drinker/straight edge punk, the difficulties that has caused me socially, and the trauma that led to my decision to avoid substances. Check it out on the Crucial Comix website. Izzie did a fantastic job bringing this story to life and I am so happy I got to collaborate with them on it (give them a follow and encourage them to work on more comics). And thank you to the folks at Crucial comix for hosting the comic. Fun fact: if you were involved in the Toronto punk scene in the 2010s, you will notice some references. Photo cred: @shireenkphotoz

Thank you, Daniel G. Wilson @daniel_1876 for your impact on BIPOC artists in our humble city Mississauga. When I was 19-24, "cool" local shows for the youth were in Toronto so I had to commute for them and get phone calls at 10pm to come home already. While there were good times in those shows I'm grateful to Daniel for booking and creating events in Mississauga that would consist of BIPOC punk bands. Mississauga used to be mostly old guys doing covers at a bar which is chill on its own but it's not my kinda thing. Getting to know more BIPOC punks has been healing. I don't feel out of place and while being called weird affectionately by family is endearing, it's a relief to know people who also need a space to let out their spunk. For this shoot, Daniel was a jury for Polaris Music Prize @polarismusicprize which occurred on the 16th if anyone else watched it (feel free to comment if you did and what you thought of it!). He requested profile photos for it. I've known Daniel since 2018. The time we saw each other before this shoot for a different one was for his band Joncro in 2021. He's always welcomed me to get to know Jamaican culture whether it's spam of recipes, music, and fashion or simply answering questions I have about family dynamics, values and norms. Thanks to Daniel I've noticed that Black musicians get comparisons to other Black musicians from other genres as their influences in reviews, and guess who IS one of Daniel's influences? Fugazi. Yes, that's right. Black people branch out to other music contrary to Courtney Love's ignorant statement that a Black person starting a band is like Lil Wayne quitting hip-hop. Plus rock isn't even White People music alone. Many bipoc bands are formed in various parts of the world and they don't get big due to Visas, money, or uhhhh g cide & occupation etc. Rock isn't only for White or assimilated people. It's been real, Daniel. Can't wait to hear you curse at another bank in Patoi because it was randomly closed on a Sunday and we had to make sure to not look sketchy trying to look for another entrance 🤣🤘✨

Been an interesting couple of months. Mostly had my nose in a bunch of writing and comics work. Big news is that I am a @polarismusicprize jury member and got to be on the grand jury this year (tune into the gala tonight on CBC Music's YouTube channel and watch the awesome sets). I have another suprise coming in about two weeks, so stay tuned for that. These lovely photos of me were taken by the ever amazing @shireenkphotoz , who was kind of enough not to think of my unorthodox ideas for new author/artist photos was crazy. I do look good in denim.
