Gallery Visit @karmakarma9 Here’s a transcription of my notes from after the show:
I saw the Milton Avery show today. 800k-1.2m. Dead. Lived his whole life in New York, to gallerist’s knowledge. Gallerist - Simon, fantastic. Also mentioned some travel to the Southwest. Can you imagine the southwest in the first half of the twentieth century? Wild and raw.
In “What would you steal?” I’d take the waiter painting. A blue waiter hands the bill to patron. Figurative work is just the best. Simon said this is a rare show of his figure work, to have them all together like this. I asked about his abstract work, mostly landscapes (seascapes). Rothko-esque.
Minty girl with guitars. Mother and child at beach. Nude in foreground, so large, man reading (tiny) in the back.
Casey Bolding was also very impressive. I liked the pairing. Plaster. “Additive, subtractive.” Reminds me of Pascal’s work. I guess the figures add to the appeal. He’s good with figures too. Karma is always impressive.
Frieze la / pascal birthday review
Saw a really bad condo and a mediocre Guston. I saw a lot of great abstract work which felt refreshing, or maybe I’m just more primed to see it, to like it lately. It started with wayde Guyton, who I think is a good entry point and then evolved from there. I guess the truth is it started with pascal and the city walls. Obviously everyone loved the giant vibrant connie Maier polychrome tableaus, nobody can resist a fruit painting. When we play “what would you steal” it was underwhelming, but I guess that’s the point when everything is for sale. Still, I chose UNTITLED_0350 by David Balliano. My favorite piece by Romany Eveleigh who has overnight become one of my favorite artists, the picture looked like a concert hall seating arrangement project sketch in an ancient secret script style, “Not so many dead artists at this fair” “push new shit” “I’m still learning” Pascal didn’t choose a piece to steal. Yali threw up at one point but I won’t say which booth, I think it’s unrelated. We ended the night at Tower bar. Martinis sliders fries build-a-sundae.
