My new Nebula X1 Pro from @soundcoreuki in action for our second @classicscinemaclub event last night. We screened the 4K digital restoration of the Princess Bride and the image and sound quality from this projector is phenomenal! Everyone was blown away by the setup and it was a great feeling to be able to share this classic film on the big screen in such glory!

Here’s a location, now go and shoot an interview! What are some of the things I consider when given this challenge?
- What’s the style of the film? Friendly and approachable, dark and moody, neutral and informative?
- What’s the theme of the interview and what would make a relevant background?
- What can be moved? Is the furniture fixed in position or can we adjust?
- What natural light is entering the room? Are there blinds or curtains?
- What artificial light sources are currently in the room? Can they be turned off or how can they be controlled if not?
- Are there any sounds that can be picked up? If they can’t be stopped where are they coming from?
- How long is the interview likely to take and what could happen during that time?
When taking all these things into consideration you then have to “make it work”. It’s very rare to have a location that’s perfect and so the goal is to achieve the best results with the least amount of compromise. Overcoming the challenges of an unfamiliar environment is one of the most rewarding parts of the job and I really enjoy pushing myself to come up with inventive solutions when the cards are stacked against me!
I’ve recently had some less than ideal locations and these photos show what I was faced with and the setups I had to implement to get the shots. It’s often not very elegant with lights and cameras squashed in corners but it’s the end result that’s important!
