I built another meditation app. After leaving my old app 15 months ago, I was convinced I wouldn’t ever do this again. But I started listening to you—really listening. And you told me what was missing from most of the other meditation apps out there. Most of them are just content libraries where you practice alone. But meditation was meant to be done in community. I recently went to Grand Central Terminal to ask people how they’re finding connection these days in New York City. One thing I kept hearing? Meeting people is exhausting right now. Covid changed us. Dating and going out with friends costs too much. And when connection doesn’t happen right away, it’s easy to feel the cost isn’t worth it. A Mother’s Day happiness thought… (Those pictures, by the way, are of my own mom [and a baby Dan, already showing a Buddha belly] and my wife, Bianca.) In Buddhism, a mother‘s love is held up as the exemplar of the capacity we all have for goodwill. I used to think maybe I was deficient in this regard—that perhaps I was uniquely selfish. That was until I discovered the science showing that benevolence (or friendliness, or what Buddhists call “loving-kindness”) is not only a skill, but also something that can reduce anxiety and elevate mood. But moms, don’t forget: you can’t leave yourself out of your own circle of care. Self-care, or whatever you want to call it, isn’t selfish. It helps you help others. Xx
