Balancing rocks, falling currency. Zimbabwe’s 100 trillion-dollar banknote has become a global symbol of economic collapse. At its centre: three quiet balancing rocks stacked against the sky — a monument to stability printed on money that became almost instantly worthless. Artist Dan Halter takes this image and carves it back into being. In collaboration with ZhanĂ© Warren, Halter created ‘Domboremari’ (“the money rocks”) — a large linocut series based on the Chiremba Balancing Rocks from Zimbabwean banknotes. Over a month of carving into linoleum flooring, then six colour editions echoing the notes of the hyperinflation years, he turns a symbol of failure into a slow, labour‑intensive meditation on value, identity, and displacement. The rocks still stand; the money has vanished. Read the full article and see more from the series on Substack.

#CollectionGervanneMatthiasLeridon #ContemporaryAfricanArt #AfricanArt #ArtCollectors #danhalter ——— English version below : In « Rifugiato mappa Del mondo » (2013), Dan Halter creates a world map using reclaimed plastic bags, materials often linked to movement and migration. Through this fragmented cartography, the work reflects on displacement, identity, and the complex flows that connect people and places, transforming everyday materials into a powerful narrative of human mobility.
