Up, up and down goes happiness. Similar to the motion of an elevator, the human level of satisfaction goes up and down different levels of happiness. To then get stuck in a perpetuous vicious cycle. As human beings, we desire non-stop. When fulfillment is reached, human nature takes over and the attraction to always wanting more draws one back down to the start.
