Tired from working in the yard today. Just tired in general I guess. But I managed to get a couple of hours in on this piece.

So wonderful to join so many friends, my colleagues from @gastoncountymuseum , fellow creative and supporters of the arts at the @gastonartsnc Breakfast for the Arts this morning! Inspiring words from the indomitable @breestallingsart , and NC State Treasure @davidchildersnc .
And thank you to @thestephnewman , not only for her support and unwavering support of local creatives, but also for inviting me to contribute a few pieces to the auction to help support such a worthy cause (and apparently started a bidding war!🤣)

'Baba'
Colored pencil on Bristol
11.5 x 17
The legend of Baba Yaga is well known thanks to popular culture, but always she's depicted as the hideous evil crone that the hero must defeat, causing mayhem and mischief across the land. But her earlier stories are much different. She was the Wise Woman of the Wood, the Protector of pregnant women and young children and her knowledge of herbs and medicine was unmatched. As was her fury -any mayhem she may have caused? Always directed at certain individuals...(you get three guesses. First two don't count and it wasn't the bear.)

"Suddenly I See"
Mixed media - Gouache, ink, colored pencil
18x24
A study piece for a Master's Class in Concept and Content with @juan.logan that I've the privilege of sitting in. Our prompt for the week was the self as a construct- to create an image that deconstructs or reconstruction the idea of identity without painting a straightforward self-portrait.
I have, quite honestly and determinedly, always avoided self-portraits. Not for any desire to avoid self-reflection, but more because I feel like so much of that has taken place in my life that my art was sort of a safe space to not have to deal with it. And when tasked with doing so, I found myself avoiding the assignment like the plague. In absorbing the other artists' Logan gave us to examine however, i found myself draw to the possibilities, particularly with Claude Cahun and Tracey Emin.
The result is this. It's rough, scattered and bold on the bottom layer, then bold again, but directed, sharp yet still with mistakes. The final layer is soft, and refined. More polished and layered, reflected with the love and strength from another. With the beginnings still there, still available to learn from.
