Show Spotlight!
@dancingclay will be performing her work “20/20”.
20/20 is a solo performance by Roxanne Steinberg, inspired by a memory of early wonder—a single book held close, a portal to a larger world. Surrounded by the weight we carry, bundled and shifting, nearly spilling, the work moves through memory, matter, and the quiet transmissions held in what we choose to keep.
This performance is a part of the Daredevil Art Festival being held Saturday July 12th & Sunday July 13th at Electric Lodge in Venice, CA

This workshop kicks off with vocal techniques based on the Japanese idea of kotodama—the belief that words carry spiritual power—while combining voice and movement at the same time. We’ll explore different styles of vocalization, and some, like those used in Noh and Kabuki, can create really intense physical sensations. At the core of these practices are basic positions drawn from ancient martial arts, which we’ll then explore through improvised movement. After that, we’ll move into Yamasaki’s subtle movement phrases.
What makes this class unique is how it flows between embodiment and disembodiment, always exploring what new possibilities can emerge when we let go of fixed ways of being in the body.
Sunday June 8, 8:45-11:15AM at Electric Lodge, dance studio

Bullock Wilshire was an elegant department store before it was the beautiful Loyola Law Library.
The ”Hall of Perfumes” and the scent of new clothes ushered in customers - clients who had personal sales people that would choose from the new season’s collections according to individual tastes. Garments designed for Bullock‘s Wilshire came from around the world - Europe, India and China… including this silk robe with the stylish embroidered label.
My mother was a model for Bullock’s Wilshire luncheons where she modeled the collections while ladies ate club sandwiches and cream pies. One day, I watched as she packed a mysterious and fetching round suitcase with some curlers and I can’t remember what else. I only got to imagine the afternoon.
During the 1992 Rodney King riots, I was pregnant with my son Zenji. Bullock Wilshire survived arson attempts as employees blocked the elevators, but every display case at ground level was broken.
It was repaired by that winter. I purchased two Armani ties - one for the wonderful Dr. Myron Bethel, the woman’s health advocate, who delivered Zenji, and one for my father, who could make magic with the patterns and textures of a shirt, tie and suit. Sadly, Bullock Wilshire closed shortly thereafter in 1993.
