Our trip to see the William Nicholson exhibition at Pallant House uncovered some designs he had made for Léonide Massine and CB Cochran during the 1920s - a version of The Rake's Progress and also a ballet called The Tub. Also included was his book illustrations for The Velveteen Rabbit, a portrait of his son Ben Nicholson, and a print of the great French actress Sarah Bernhardt @pallanthousegallery #pallanthouse #williamnicholson #leonidemassine #cbcochrane #rakesprogress #theatredesign #costumedesign #illustrator #artist #velveteenrabbit #sarahbernhardt #bennicholson #artexhibition #ballet #1920sballet

Dulwich Picture Gallery has a very attractive exhibition of paintings by the Danish artist Anna Ancher on at the moment. Working between the 1870s and the 1920s, her work spanned social realism and a more painterly response to the play of light in interiors and landscapes. I didn’t like everything I saw, but here are some of the paintings that I admired @dulwichgallery #annaancher #danishartist #19thcenturyart #20thcenturyart #interiors #landscapes #portraits #19thcenturydanishart #20thcenturydanishart @annaa_ancher @ancheranna #exhibition #danishartexhibition

Who knew that London’s largest theatre was the Streatham Hill Theatre, which opened in 1929, and could seat 2,500? The audience capacity was bigger than the London Coliseum, the Royal Opera House and the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, and saw such star performers as Ivor Novello, Anna Pavlova, Paul Robeson as Othello, John Gielgud as Hamlet and Peggy Ashcroft as Hedda Gabler. It’s been closed as a theatre since 1962, but is Grade 2 Listed, and was open to the public again this evening as part of Streatham Festival. This was the theatre that Mary Clarke saw her first ballet - the Markova-Dolin Ballet in 1936, and Antoinette Sibley told me “That’s where I did my second Swan Lake”. @streathamhilltheatre #streathamhilltheatre #streathamhill #streatham #southlondon #theatre @streathamfestival

Style over substance? I think so with the V&A’s exhibition on Marie Antoinette.
